To address the original question--again, since there seems to be no opinion on the specific situation--I will reserve the right in future to column melee any enemy unit of any type which is also in column. The original intent of the use of the column formation, by the makers of the game, was that wh...

When testing, the games under design never use passwords, mainly because many glitches in design can be corrected in an ongoing game if it is not encoded. Interesting premise about a game-master....

Mike I agree with you about the column melee in general, and thanks for steering us back to the original question. Having cut my teeth on HPS while designing Overland, the question of column melee never came up among the testers in any way. It appears to have become embedded within the forum so deep...

Gents: Please consider this additional exception to the house rule for no assaults in column: If an infantry unit in column meets a artillery unit in column the infantry player should have the option to execute a hasty assault. Otherwise, the infantry has to stand there until the artillery unlimbers...

I also noted your suggestion for garrison units. Great idea! I was just thinking, if we had a bunch of objs stretching back to the Rapidan there would end up being a cat and mouse game where the rebs steal them back, and then the yanks have to return to kick them out. I think we'll see something in ...

Gen Whitehead I suppose the reason you have had no takers so far on a mana a mano Overland is because nobody disagrees with you, especially moi, since I built the sucker. It is always, as Lee said, a matter of time. A person of exceptional tactical ability (not me, to be sure) would make for a highe...

Any such change is done at the home office. It is not something that I as the designer can modify. Requested changes to the engine, if they happen at all, take one or two years. Requests go thru Rich Hamilton at JTS support.

I would more than gladly entertain any general or specific suggestions to bring the Monster closer to the mark. One problem with the way objectives points are awarded is that there is no difference in points if you lose, say Spotsylvania, on May 8th, or if you held on to it until May 20, as historic...

The AI would NEVER in a zillion years make a playable opponent in the campaign scenario. I doubt if you could even count on the AI to move selected units for you, as Chris mentioned. Don't know if an update would come out any time soon, but I will make some changes for the next one. Meantime, you ca...

Cam and y'all Here are the reasons things are set up the way they are: Johnston's Bde, of Early's Div near Hanover Junction, is a wholesale replacement for Johnston's Bde, originally in Rodes' Div. I placed them there to spare the player the tedium of bringing them allll the way up from Richmond. (T...

"action of coming in," from in + coming. As a present participle adjective, from 1753. Of game, from 1892; transferred in World War I to artillery; as a warning cry of incoming shellfire, it seems to date to the U.S. war in Vietnam (1968). (Cut and pasted from Dictionary.com) You're right,...

Chickamauga and Antietam come to mind. Folks usually shy away from Shiloh, but I think it would be very interesting with the right command arrangement.

Lots of interesting points here. 70 hexes is exactly five miles in the game scale, and I agree it is an unrealistic distance for getting consistent sightings of the enemy, but there are instances of units being sighted at such distance. The outpost on Clark's Mtn, at the beginning of Overland, not o...
