I agree, quality can be hard to come to agreement on, due to the subjective nature. I also agree that it's not entirely experience, but training, leadership and esprit. The Iron Brigade fought as well as any "veteran" troops its first time out, while other units had a hard luck reputation throughout...

I disagree. Yeah, looking for opfire at 5 hexes for infantry is a bit much (ok, alot much) But on the other hand, if an enemy infantry unit tries to march across a field at 5 hexes in front of a large combined battery, I expect them to pay for it. I still contend the best solution is to give opfire ...

If anything the bonus is too low. Let's look at each of them individually. Fire modifier: Green troops were known to 1) Do silly things like forget to tamp the round, leave their ramrod in the gun, such and so. 2) Aim horridly 3) Fire in a fit of nerves, well out of effective range. On the other han...

As I've said, I think that they've both got strong and weak points. Perhaps the mobility and the like is too much without phases, leading to ahistorical play? On the other hand, advancing across a clear field in view of multiple units and cannon is a far more reasonable option in phased play, becaus...

I'll agree with the point that if you use melee phases (as Antietam does) the "final defensive fire" should be full strength. I'm not sure why it isn't and that needs to be looked at by Rich W and company. However, the flip side of this discussion, aside from the "6 files per turn" thing needs to be...

Sounds good, though you may wish to add something to the effect that "further ACW games may be added at the cabinet's discretion" or the like, to indicate that when new games come out, they'll be considered [:D]

Hm, I'm not sure what happens if they are right on the hex.

Of course, there is the whole autorout protection, but the exact hex, I'm not sure.

It certainly can happen. For instance, in my current Antietam campaign General King is absent from the small fight the day before 2nd Bull Run (blanking on the name), because he historically wasn't there.

It would be for Rich W to answer this, but I'd imagine that if the Division Commander wasn't placed on map to begin with, the replacement also wouldn't show. For instance, if the historical Division Commander missed the battle because he was felled with a terrible case of gout, he's just not put on ...

Along with the Ironclads game from Yaquinto, there was a game from 3W along the same line called Shot and Shell.

Are you maybe playing a campaign scenario? (a .cpf file). If so, then you have to get at it through the campaign frontend, instead of the regular game frontend.
