Hi, I think the Mexican American War is more similar to the War of 1812 than to the Civil War, both historically and by game design. This was before the advent of the rifle-musket and rifled artillery. About the only technological improvement in weaponry over Napoleonic days was the revolver. I don'... |

There was fighting in city streets, but I don't believe any major battles were fought in cities, unlike battles such as Stalingrad in WWII. I suspect this was primarily because civilians were generally considered off-limits during most of the war, but it might also have included tactical considerati... |

Hi,
I'm an old man and my memory isn't what it used to be, but does anyone know if the 5 game deal is still offered? Couldn't find anything at HPS.

Hi, Hank,
Can't answer your question, but thanks for the info. Historically, a lot of Reb guns started their career as Yank guns, but I don't think they are able to reflect that in the game engine yet.

Hi, I agree that the best author I have read, strictly based on the quality of his prose, was Catton. I think Shelby Foote uses words well also. And Ed Bearss. For biographies, nothing beats Lee's Lieutenants, by Douglas Southall Freeman, if you can call it a biography. The best analysis of the rise... |

Hi, Rich, In response to your suggestion in the Spiked Guns thread, I figured I would start a new one on artillery crews so folks can weigh in. What I had in mind was a crew of 25 men/gun as in the game. As men become casualties the artillery unit becomes less effective in direct proportion to the l... |

Hi, Rich, I think what General Whitehead is saying is that since the attacker is not going to lose any points unless a gun is destroyed, it is to his advantage to advance sections ahead of the troops. If a crew happens to be killed, no points lost. If enemy infantry seize the section, stacks of arti... |

I hadn't thought about it before, but I also agree. You ought to get some points for spiking the guns.

Hi, Captain, I think it depends on whether you view these games more as games or more as an attempt to simulate the Civil War battle. If it is just a game and the object is to win, I don't have a problem with it. If the goal is to try to simulate the battle, that is a gamey tactic. With an imperfect... |

I like it, because it has four of the major battles in the west; Perryville, Murfreesboro, Chickamauga and Chattanooga. There are a number of campaigns, including one that includes all small battles, but I don't know if the results of any of the battles affect the others. MG Mike Mihalik 1/III/AoMis... |

The whole reason for entry protection has to do with folks knowing where reinforcements are going to arrive and having a reception committee waiting when they get there. And in fairness, if a general knew where the enemy was going to arrive, that is probably what he would do historically. So the cur... |

Hi,
Personally, neither of these games appeals to me, but each appears to have a following. I certainly have no objection to including them among the games authorized by the club. The more the merrier, I always say!
