The comparison of Grant to Lee kind of reminds me of the chess exhibitions where a grand master would play without a rook. Every now and then a challenger would prevail. That didn't make him the equal of a grand master.

I favor "This Hallowed Ground" by Bruce Catton. If you had not limited it to a single volume, probably Shelby Foote's trilogy, although Catton also wrote a couple of trilogies. I like Catton's style better than McPherson's.

I think Bill provided some good information. Sherman noted in his memoirs that Wisconsin regiments were the exception to the rule of creating new regiments rather than sending replacements to existing regiments, and said a Wisconsin regiment late in the war was reckoned the equivalent of a brigade. ... |

Hi, General,
Col Keyes notified me that he has tried to contact you but the emails bounced. They bounced for me too, so I tried to contact Army. No luck. Perhaps we are surrounded and cut off. If so, the 1st Division will fight to the last man.

Hi, Bill, I meant to say 300 men would occupy a 100 yds of frontage in two ranks of 150 men/rank if each man took up two feet of frontage. The two feet is a guesstimate, but I can't imagine a man needing less than two feet to load and fire his rifle. Again, if you could retrieve the Gettysburg regim... |

Hi, Bill, I believe the standard combat deployment for a regiment in the Civil War was a two-rank line. If you figure two feet/man that would give you 300 men/100 yds frontage. At Gettysburg, a lot of the regimental frontages are marked with a stone for each flank, so it would be easy to calculate i... |

I think single turn can get screwed up if you save it. But it is autosaved somehow, so that if something happens and you have to restart the game it will pick up where you left off. But with multiphase you have save it or you start again at the beginning of the phase. I think. Don't have time tonigh... |
