The 18 turn weather variant - W-May 14, 1863 - The Battle of Jackson (Historical) - might slow down your advance a bit. I don't mind which optional rules, as varying them sometimes can add a bit of variety. I usually play with the following ON and feel that they work well and seem historically accur...

Mark, I've just finished playing another opponent, so should be able to fit in a new game even though I'm about to take part in the tournament. I've played Chickasaw Bayou and Fort Gibson recently, but we could try another Vicksburg scenario. Maybe Grindstone Ford if you'd enjoy a contested river cr...

I'm looking for an opponent (or two) for some small to medium sized battles. I have all the various JT titles and would be willing to play most scenarios except Shiloh or 1st Manassas (which I've played recently). Perhaps a short Petersburg or Forgotten Campaigns game? Or suggest something else if y...

How about allowing Rebel units to deploy Napoleonic style detachable skirmishers and adding in some "chateaux" hexes for key strong-points - that way they be able to hold off the bluebellies at 10:1 odds.

I haven't got Campaign Overland yet, but I certainly like the idea of constructing trenches mid-game and wonder how this would work. Ideally, it would make sense if trenches, abattis, embankments, etc should start off with lower defensive benefits and then gradually increase in value depending on ho...

Wheat today is shorter (about 1m) than in the past. For instance Emmer wheat is 2m high. I'm not sure what varieties were most common in the 19th century, but I'd imagine they'd have been taller than present-day wheat.

Surely the height of crops in field hexes should vary depending on time of year? However, I've noticed that at 1st Bull Run the height of fields is 0ft, which really doesn't seem right for late July unless the fields had been left fallow or the crops trampled/cut down prior to the battle. Anyway, th...

How useful might it be to add time-sensitive objective hexes? This would mean that a player would get points for every turn they control the objective rather than just whoever controls the hex on the final turn. Thus, for instance, in the 3 day Gettysburg scenario, instead of 600 points the Cemetery...

Since trenches and abattis are present in the game and can be added in the editor, surely it also ought to be possible to construct them mid game, given sufficient time? So, in addition to constructing breastworks, could units be permitted to construct trenches and abattis as well. This would be a g...

Reduced stacking is certainly a feasible way of making it harder for the attacker to concentrate overwhelming force. I also like the idea of units getting "pinned", like in the Squad Battles series (so it should be possible to port this feature across), but maybe pinned units should still ...

I'm not sure that it would be a good idea to actually prevent melee from column formation because there are situations (eg. crossing bridges) where it's necessary to use this formation. Also there may be instances where column melees, or something resembling column melees, actually occurred. But per...

Do folks feel that meleeing in the game occurs too often compared with the historical battles? Should there perhaps be restrictions on meleeing, such as requiring a leader? Or a morale test that needs to be passed for a unit to be able to melee? Should defending units get a special fire bonus when m...

I also prefer the SSI idea of time based rather than HPS's random chance. It's more logical and the longer a unit spent entrenching the stronger the position ought to become, but with the maximum level higher in 1864 than 1862.

I doubt I'd want to refight this battle without the Rebel defensive position being strengthened by abattis and possibly also trenches.

Should there be Rebel abattis and trenches at Kennesaw mountain? I don't notice any in HPS Atlanta and in my current game it's been hard to hold up the Union advance. According to Sherman's memoirs: "We continue to press forward on the principle of an advance against fortified positions. The wh...
