Silencing a battery or encouraging a battery to pull out appears to be very variable, historically. It might occur within a couple of minutes of counter battery fire or take as long as 90 minutes. And while batteries might fight on with 30%, 40% or on one occassion 60% casualties, 10% was usually en... |

Like everything about what happens in the game, a lot depends on the "distance" and "time period" youy view the results over. Regarding the artillery crew, I offer the following interpretation. The crew took 100% casualties --- they were not necessarily killed, some where, most ran away for the dura... |

I believe a common trait among gamers is that if there is more detail to the calculation, there is more precision in the result. I'm not sure that is true. I'm also a big picture person, so don't think the goal of any system is to have every event conform to some historical benchmark -- which incide... |

Congrats and thanks to Gen Walter, who indeed sets a high standard for command.
Best wishes to Gen Miller as he embarks on his latest adventure.

I support Jeff's observation about the size of the HPS games. I'm also in the camp of preferring smaller scenarios. I probably average 2 active games at a time and 2-3 turns per week. I recently concluded a Corinth Campaign that lasted around 18 months -- I would not do it a again -- it's just too l... |

...two other ideas for some of the things surfaced in this post. Without getting too complicated, I would suggest that there might be some value to redefining the requirements for the various ranks to include a contribution to things that are viewed as important. The key is to make whatever addtions... |

I think the structure of the club is very good. I like it. I am not a fan of "role playing". I enjoy competitive games. I like to understand why things happened the way they did and what could be done differently to influence the outcomes -- both in the real battles and in the games. I enjoy playing... |

I have absolutely no idea what the upcoming HPS ACW titles are. But the one it should be is the Shenandoah Valley Campaigns of '62 and '64. I think the mix of battle sizes and the mix of who is on the offense would make it most interesting. Probably some possibilties for a number of what-if scenario... |

A couple comments about the 5% suggestion. It was not completely arbitrary. In looking at historical battles over the years, my sense is that the victor incurred around 20% casualties and the loser around 25% -- hence the 5% suggestion. There were clearly many excepions. The reason for associating 5... |

I think this is a very good question and I would like to see some of the experienced scenario designers outline some guidelines about how to populate a map with useful objective hexes. From my own limited experience they can be useful to induce one or both sides to take up the offense. They can infl... |

I'm a dabbler in all this, but I have two CD drives on my PC and if I recall I had to have the BG CD in the drive I origianlly loaded the program from for it to run. I don't know why or whether it is relevent, but something else to consider. If everything else does fail, why not just get an older PC... |

Congrats to both.
Gen Zodda and I just completed a 5 game Corinth scenario. Believe he was a Major when it started. I told him it would make him a General.

A suggestion. Unless you have other experience, you might want to start with something a tad smaller then the full battle. Out of the Mist is good scenario in BGG -- and it will give you some practice for the bigger game -- of course we all know the rebel strategy is to win on the first day and hold... |

The 12 turn Battle of Iuka between BG Ted Huffman and LG Bob Breen has ended in a Draw. The game was very much of a linear fight in the woods with the Union taking a couple of the forward victory hexes and some rebel guns, but the overall casualties were a virtual tie in terms of points. The union l... |

So now Commander Kozial is fighting the entire Southern Army brain trust!
I guess that would make the odds just about even [:D]
Perhaps Commander Kozial should post his strategy at the Union War College!
