I would be interested in attending either weekend. As a Union 'blue belly' I would add some diversity (or target practise)to your group![;)]

Not to rain on the parade,or get the dates changed, but it appears very likely I will be in Virginia around September 15th. I have a 2 day Navy conference in Little Creek, so I would look to get in early and tour a battlefield...

Just posting as an FYI...

If push comes to shove there is Hagerstown. Hagerstown will provide a wider choice of eateries and nitelife for those who don't require much nap time.......

There is or was a Campground near Sharpsburg Battlefield. I passed the night there prior to my brief tour circa 1988.

I was passing thru Sheperdstown last year on my way to visit Russ. The town is like so many other from the mid 1800's and well worth a visit! A drive along the Potomac river is also a treat!

Gents,

When Rich Hamilton planned an ACWGC get together a few years ago we stayed in Hagerstown. I don't recall the name of the motel, it was not one of the chains but it was clean and reasonable and not too far off the exit on I-70 and close to an intersection that allowed quick access to the roads to Gettysburg and Antietam.

Notso,

I really can't remember the name of the place but I've contacted Rich Hamilton to see if he recalls it. That was 4-5 years ago and half the time I can't remember where I was last week.

As to my getting there it's not out of the question but we'll have to wait and see.

Notso,

Rich Hamilton sent me the link the hotel's website, seems my memory is worse than I thought, it is in Frederick not Hagerstown. Must have stayed in Hagerstown on one of my other trips to Sharpsburg. Reason I couldn't find it was I was thinking it was the Black Horse Inn and it's the Red Horse Inn. I was half right, it does have horse in the name. Anyway seems it is now a Comfort Inn but the location is still close enough to be considered.

Harpers Ferry is just down the road on US 15 south which is a block from the hotel and Gettysburg is north on the same highway. Antietam can be reached by going west on I70 to Hagerstown then taking the exit from there to the battlefield or you can take Rte 40 west from Frederick. The hotel website is

My conference is indeed going to be the 15th and 16th of September, so I would most likely try to get in the Wednesday or Thursday before. It would be late in the day, since I'd be coming from the West Coast...I should be able to nail down travel plans in July timeframe...
