The good old United States suffers by comparison with European countries in length of vacation allowed by employers. Two weeks or so is normal for us. Twice that (or more) is not uncommon over there.

It must be nice, when I was working at the American Embassy in Belgrade,Yugo. Everyone would take the whole month of August off and go to the beaches or so it seemed. When I would go up to the consulate in Zagreb the town seemed like a ghost town not to many people in town. Was kind of nice, didn't have to wait to long to get into a restrarant.

Well im still a student so we have like a year long vacation only in May-June and January we have to study for an exam sesion. Well im currently sitting in a Town of Biala Podlaska near Poland - Belyarussia Border. I was in Serpelice a small village near BUG river it was really nice and peacefoul. I got some nice pics from there. The best from it was when ther was a really big Thunderstorm in the evening and my GF begun to pray and i was sitting next to her loughing that she is afraid of a harmles storm;) Any way when you are working in Poland you must have around 20 days when you are working less then 10 years and 26 if you work more then that. M.D studies count as 8 years of work;)

In the U.S., I don't think there is a set rule, but it's typical that under 5 years you get 10 days, over 5 years 15 days and over 10 years you get 20 days (4 weeks). Plus you get various holidays: Christmas, Thanksgiving are mostly universal (but some have to work, but get compensated in other ways).

A lot of places don't give you any kind of compensation anymore. In my own case, I work for small business so we always close on Christmas Day and Thanksgiving. I am required to work some of the other Holidays if they happen to fall on days that I am scheduled to work but since we get paid Double Time for that, nobody complains. I'd hate to admit how much money I made this July 4th sitting around and doing nothing...[:p]

Of course if you work for the Federal government the way I did about 10 years ago, you get the really important Holidays off as well...like Colombus Day, Veteran's Day and Martin Luther King's Birthday...[:D]

Hey Col. Przemek,
Over here November 11th is Veteran's Day, July 4th is our Independence Day, and May 30th is Memorial Day for all of our fallen Veterans, but it started out as a Memorial day for all Yankee dead from the War of Northern Agression.

Before I went on permanent vacation, 3 years ago. I had a very good deal. I had 7 weeks vacation, per year. Of that 5 weeks were actually vacation (after 20 years) and 2 weeks were compensation for holidays. If the holiday was on your scheduled work day, you worked it. As compensation, we would get the days off, which worked out to 10 days for 10 holidays.

It was an excellent plan.[;)][:p]
