I hereby pledge never to eat Candied Yams, Pineapple, Coconut, or Beets ever again!!!!! This is day one for me! I can do this! (Of course, my willpower is greatly helped by the fact that I utterly detest all of those).....Regards, Hank

And the reason for this pledge? A new diet? A protest over the wife's cooking? Did I miss a post that clarifies the clear disdain and outrage with regard to these things? Though I must admit that I do like beets [:p]

My brother lives in Georgia and the first time I visited him and we went out to eat it seemed to me that every cooked vegetable was spinkled with little marshmellows and/or some kind of syrup. And breakfasts! I was reminded of the film "My Cousin Vinny" and the scene in the greasy spoon where the short-order cook is asked if he knows that there is an ongoing cholesterol problem in the country.

Anyway General Hank, whatever this is about...an inside joke or a hidden agenda having to do with an overdose of these particularly offending fruits and vegetable, I certainly respect your obvious outrage over them....I feel the same way about Polenta [:D] And I are a Eye-talion. [:I]

Now, let's be gentle with the lost causers . . .

. . . although anyone who's ever traveled much in the south comes away with the feeling that Sherman just didn't go far enough.

I can agree with the coconut, by itself it really isn't anything spectuctular, but beets????? They are one of summer gardening's best things, specially new beets (teenie, tiny ones) cooked with the greens, so you get those little nibbles of sweetness.

Given the state of supply for you Rebs, I figured you'd eat shoe leather, let alone swear off anything.
