Jeff,

I enjoyed William Davis' work (Battle at Bull Run). Very readable account and was close to 300 pages. I liked his book on New Market as well.

I have not read Davis' book on the topic, but can recommend the following books covering the 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas):

- John Hennessy, The First Battle of Manassas, An End to Innocence.

- Joanna M. McDonald, "We Shall Meet Again", The First Battle of Manassas (Bull Run)

Especially Hennessy's book is a good read (as is his book on the 2nd Battle of Bull Run).

I have Davis's book and enjoyed it, having read it several times over the years whenever my interest is rekindled in the battle. He not only covers the battle but talks about the personalities and the units involved. Since it was one of the earlier books in my collection this made it more interesting to me.

I would agree with all those already mentioned, but there is also one called "Donnybrook" - I forget the author - but it was a good one as well. Did I nice job explaining difficulties faced by the average soldier (heat, marching fatigue, etc.) and how it impacted command decisions, etc.

Thanks to all. I was at the battlefield for the first time this past week, and although I have played 1st Bull Run about a dozen times, the historical version was quite different than any of my gaming experiences! I just realized as I was walking behind Jackson's Virginians on Henry House Hill, that I didn't know all that much about the battle, having never read a specific account.

I really like Hennesey's 2nd Bull Run - he used to be the head Park Service guy at the battlefield (now down at Petersburg, according to the volunteer at the Visitors Center when I asked for their recommendation on a book).

I ended up with Davis' book, it seemed more substantial than End of Innocence, and I didn't like the cover and type in that one...

<font color="red">John Hennesy is now the Chief Historian at the Fredericksburg Area Battlefields National Park. He is also a leading force behind battlefield preservation in Virginia. His book on 2nd Bull Run is definitive. Great guy.</font id="red">

I would suggest reading the volumes pertaining to the topic of your choice when it comes to just about any battle or campaign from the most authoritive author ever on the topic.....That of course would be the massive 427 volume set "The War Between The Yellow And The Gray", By Granny Clampet. Enjoy!
