Hi all,

I was wondering about what everyone thought about the best Civil War magazines?

What's out there? What's worth the money? What what what??

Thanks...

There is one published by Antique Power / Vintage Truck forgot the name though, but if you fined the link to Antique Power it should be there and the price. I think it is only published six times a year. I use to get their Vintage Truck magazine and it cost 24.00 a year and it was published every other month and was a good one, since I like old trucks and restored one years ago.

Hi,

I have only subscribed to two such magazines, Civil War Times Illustrated and America's Civil War. CWTI has been around for forty years at least. I would check the public library and see if they had a file. I gave up on magazines, even though they have interesting and informative articles, because I found I prefer reading books, which are usually more in depth and deal with a single topic. After awhile, subscription fees add up. Anyway, both magazines were similar in scope and subject. CWTI was probably more informative and America's Civil War more entertaining.

Col. Thompson,

In the past, I had subscribed to CWTI. I found the articles too detailed for my taste at the time, but it's been several years now and I might think differently about it now. (That was before I was into reenacting OR these games.) At the time, I found the most interesting part of that magazine was the advertisements.

I have picked up a couple issues of "Blue & Gray" on topics I was especially interested in (Corinth & Shiloh). I thought the articles in both were far too long & detailed for a single magazine. For instance, the 'Corinth' issue I bought just about the time HPS came out with its game of the same title, to find out more about the battle. Instead, the issue dealth with Corinth throughout the entire war. IMHO, the article should have been sub-divided into several different articles. Maybe it would have even been better as a small book, with different chapters.

After those experiences, I gave up on CW magazines, until my wife recently found what appeared to be a too-good-to-pass-up deal. Unfortunately, like all things that sound too good to be true, this was, also: After she had paid her money the deal fell through and she was informed that magazine (I don't even remember which one) was no longer available -- but she could apply her money to another magazine in their list. After consulting with me, she chose "America's Civil War". I have been pleasantly surprised with it. Some of the articles are too elementary for any serious student of the war, but they were all interesting.

Good luck in your search.

Your humble servant,
Gen 'Dee Dubya' Mallory
