Post subject:  New version of Tiller Battleground games

Hi folks ... Matrix Games has announced that John Tiller's Battleground Series of reworked Talonsoft-era games will released for sale later this month. The civil war games include Gettysburg, Antietam, Shiloh, Chickamauga and Bull Run. The Napoleonic games include Waterloo, Prelude to Waterloo and Napoleon in Russia.

These games originally had better graphics than the HPS games (hand-painted maps). I'm not sure what changes and upgrades have been made to the game system, but there has been some talk on forums of a much better AI (one of the few weak-points of Tiller games).

But some folks think the only changes being made are to make the games Vista compatible. Queries on this point to Matrix have gone unanswered.

The games are to be sold in bundles. Apparently you can buy both groups of titles for $50 (download) or $60 boxed.

Cheers, Conjotter

I would not buy any of these, as they are nothing more than reworked games, with no redeeming value. (IMO)

If you are inclined to buy them, as least wait until the shipping versions are out and see what PLAYERS have to say about them.

I think ANYTHING they (Matrix) say is called MARKETING and theyare only interested in $$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Your dollars.[:0]

I enjoy my TS games, but since I already own them, I won't be buying the new release until I have a clear understanding of what if any changes have been made.

As for a purportedly improved AI, I don't worry about such things, since I game against Rebs...[:D] No intelligence required![:D]

Just to clear a couple points.

These new versions will be Vista and 32 bit.

There are no A/I improvements, or any other enhancements. However, they said they may introduce other battles in later versions, and possible engine tweaks.

Also, the nappy bundle will include AOS.

These gentlemen are the facts.

One more thing, Matrix has promised this release for several months on the month. So don't count the days!!!

One thing I am curious about is whether someone with the new Matrix editions would be able to play PBEM vs someone with the old TS editions

I would say yes, if both are using the latest 32 bit versions, since there are no engine changes, but I'm not certain. Good question.

My understanding is that you can build scenarios but only with Corinth 1.01 ?

What if I wanted to build a scenario with Gettysburg ( latest patch ) to taker advantage of all the patchs/upgrades ?

As long as you use the existing OOBs, and maps, you can do what you want. You can even create your own pdt file.

And you can take a sub-map of an existing larger map...and using your example John of Gettysburg, there are a huge amount of choices to fight over. Then you can select any OOB in the game and put your scenario together. There's several posted here:

So, it is true that the ACW games aren't AS modable as other series of games, it certainly doesn't render them useless in the scenario design category.

Is there a patch coming out for those of us that already have the BG games and Vista? I wouldn't want to have to replace games that I have already paid for once.

Heh i bet that the Matrix Re-edition of old TS games will come out in Poland few months after initial premiere... the only difference will be in the price it will not be 50$ but something like 8$:) They are published in Poland by a Company named "Nicolas Games" i bought WITP and WPO by matrix and paied like 15$ for both of them;) So i will probably buy them to see what kind of game are these as i belive the old ones were never published here in Poland.

I guess that another question would be as follows: Will the Matrix version be compatible with the Battleground version if one wishes a PBEM game? If not, then I doubt that many will pop for another $50 for games which they already own.
