I would choose Forrest, but Mike has a great point, I think Forrest in charge of an army is a good idea.

Depends upon the theater of operation. Stuart certainly was a master of cavalry operations given a more traditional tactical battle plan. I doubt that Forrest could have done better (well, maybe Gettysburg). Forrest had a natural affinity for more aggressive and independent operations in underdeveloped areas and was less encumbered by classical military doctrine. I seriously doubt Stuart could have duplicated Forrests accomplishments had he been active in the west.

I think Forrest had a better understanding of the future of cavalry and how to use them in the current war as well, whereas Stuart was still dreaming of the glory days of the Napoleonic wars and massed cavalry charges, etc.

If I wanted an officer to command a big raid deep into enemy territory to disrupt supply lines and communication, I'd send Stuart. If I wanted my cavalry to fight, I'd send Forrest.

I don't believe Forrest ever commanded anything much larger than a brigade did he? While Stuart commanded a full division of cavalry and on several occasions took over corps commands and performed very ably. That does not mean Forrest would not be a good commander of larger formations only that he would be an unknown quantity in such a role. Now that I have muddied up the water I'll be leaving.[:D]

I'd still take little Phil over either of them.[:p]
