I've been playtesting Gary Grigsby's War Between the States and I've been posting an AAR on my battle against the Confederate AI on the Matrix Forum. You can see how bad I am at trying to win this game. You'll find it here: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1748647
Check it out and a couple of other AAR's to get a feel for how the game plays.

Hey Mark,

When do you think that it will be ready for sale, to us poor folks.

Hi, Mark,

I really appreciate your AAR. A couple of years ago a strategic ACW
game was a need. Now there are three or four. Looks like this game
needs more work on balance though. The Yanks historically were able to make a lot more progress than you, and it sounds to me like it's not you but the game. Saw a lot of familiar names and some not so familiar. What has General Thomas been doing all this time?

Well don't use my play as a guide to balance. For some reason I'm having a tough time getting a good grasp on how to play this game the best way. I don't think I was aggressive enough early and when the Rebels get fortified in Kentucky it can really put you behind. I'm playing a human opponent as the Confederacy and I think the war will be over before the end of 1863 so I'm pretty sure it is me. Thomas is serving as a commander in Lyons army in Cairo. You can play the game with historical leader values or unknown. Playing with unknown and having to commit troops to combat to discover some of the values of a leader brings a whole new level of complexity to the game.

Can't say for sure but we are pushing hard to finish playtesting so I expect it will be sooner rather then later.

It'll be interesting to see which of the 3 or 4 emerges as a clear leader, if at all...I think my dollars will be waiting on that...

Here is another AAR for GGWBTS that I found fascinating. It is a long one, but a nailbiter, between Jon Pyle and Joel Billings. They have completed the game to the end of 1864. Lots of good info there.
