Post subject:  Heating one's house

Does anyone work in the energy industry?

Should I convert my house from #2 oil to natural gas? Would it save me money in the long run??

Signed,

A cold and broke New Yorker!

Natural Gas, cleaner, cheaper. I'd switch.

Depends on where you live. When I was in Alabama natural gas was cheaper then electricity. Up here in Illinois (where I'm in charge of the next Copperhead movement [:D]), electricity is cheaper than natural gas. Check your local energy rates and try to get as efficient heating unit as possible with whatever you decide. Good luck!

I don't think it much matters, with all the electric companies converting their coal fired plants to natural gas I've watched my gas bill go from @ $100 a month on the budget to $180 in the last couple years and just got notice the gas company is requesting a 20% rate hike from the PUC for next year so I expect to be paying $200 next fall. Hate to replace my furnace while it's still working but it's 20 years old and I have been considering whether I should buy one of the new high efficiency jobs.

My wife always said that I was an idiot. You mean to tell me that I could have been bottling this natural gas and selling it for those prices!!! Man, I not only missed out on making money, but I had to pay a contractor to come in and take some of the insulation out of the house so that there would be some natural drafts to let my farts escape. I feel like I missed my calling, and I feel a little bloated.
