I find the position taken by the USMA to be totally frivolous. I am amazed that we gave in to their high handed tactics. I do not think the government has any proprietary interest in the place name of West Point. I am sorry we went to all the trouble to change everything.

I felt the same way as many of you when I first heard of the reason for the change. However, a quick we search led me to a pdf file on the West Point (the actual academy) that provided a list of phrases that have been trademarked or registered by the USMA:
Black Knights ®
United States Military Academy ®
U.S. Military Academy ®
West Point ®
USMA ®
West Point Association of Graduatesâ„¢
West Point AOGâ„¢
Military Academyâ„¢
Army Black Knightsâ„¢
Army Lady Knightsâ„¢
Army Baseballâ„¢
Army Basketballâ„¢
Army Cross Countryâ„¢
Army Footballâ„¢
Army Hockeyâ„¢
Army Lacrosseâ„¢
Army Rifleâ„¢
Army Soccerâ„¢
Army Softballâ„¢
Army Swimmingâ„¢
Army Tennisâ„¢
Army Trackâ„¢
Army Volleyballâ„¢
Army Wrestlingâ„¢
Duty, Honor, Countryâ„¢
The Long Gray Lineâ„¢

Perhaps they were afraid we would make sweatshirts and cut into their sales?

You can trademark "Military Academy"? And basically everything starting with "Army"?

I suppose they could then trademark "Army" as such as well. Maybe Corps, Division, Brigade, and you name it, too?

Sorry for being late on the uptake. When I saw this in the Woodin Injun I thought it was a joke. How long has the ACWGC been up and continuously running? 10+ years? Makes one wonder (not) when the "guvermint" finally gets around to things..

Thanks to all those who promptly hitched them up and made the changes keeping someone out of Leavenworth.[:)]

<br />Recently, the REAL United States Military Academy at West Point Legal folks sent us an email to stop using "West Point". This led to us in the Union Command going "OH SH!T", and dropping small green apples down our trousers at the thought of federal jail time.

In a time of quick change several folks including Kelly Ross, Matt Perrenod, Ed Stewart and Larry Quick stepped up to transition web pages and rename our venerable instition as the Union Military Academy.

My thanks to all of you for your efforts at keeping me from wearing a bright orange jump suit![:D][:p][:0]

My take is that they took a copyright on all those terms first. Then when they had to find work for some underemployed staffer, they told him to search the internet for all possible unlawful uses of the said terms (i.e. sites using them & not owned by the US govt.), and then have their legal folk send a letter to the owners of these sites, sight unseen. So I'd say nobody ever spent a second trying to figure out why, how, and with which intent we use "West Point". We just oughtn't too, is all.

I have to admit this is what I find so pathetic and laughable about US Goverment institutions and their high handed attitudes regarding the "man in the street" as we say over here, on the other hand I notice that "West Point Military Academy" is not on the list mentioned earlier. Maybe you should use that, trademark it, and when West Point comes calling either sell it to them for an obscene amount or even better tell them to go screw themselves. [;)]

I wonder if these guys have permission to use "Black Knights" for their football team. Or how many other high schools use that.

Gentlemen:
I received a copy of the cease and desist letter and am in the process of researching the issue. When I complete my efforts, I will post an opinion regarding the right to the use of the name.

I would see if it was interferring with search engine results, but not even close. Clearly a pointless exercise in futility....

In response to Dierk's question, the words "cease and desist" are not actually used. In the legal field a letter of this type is generally referred to as such. The actual language used was to "protest the unauthorized use" of trademarks registered to the USMA and the US Army.
