Post subject:  3D or 2D?

I'm an old throwback to the cardboard counter days, so I have a built-in preference for playing my BG and HPS sims in 2D. I only very seldom use the 3D views, and then usually just to check out details like whether I have intrenchments built or not on a specific hexside. But I'd kind of like to find out in which view(s) most of the club members like to play their games and why.

I only ever play in 3D and I use zoom-in and zoom-out 3D views fairly equally. Conversely to Joe's comment, I only use the 2D screens to check on the layout of terrain that is obscured by the 3D elevation and where breastworks are etc...(if only we had a rotate map feature?)

I've only tried playing with 2D once I think. I just cannot 'see' the battlefield using a 2D view and I would be at an EXTREME disadvantage if an opponent ever insisted that we play only in 2D for some reason!

I much prefer 3d (for the feeling of immersion in the action), but I use the 2d for getting an overview and to get a better idea of where enemy units are moving when watching the replays. I tend to have my fingers over the number keys so I can switch between views at will. I have some really good 3d graphical mods installed too which makes the 3d views look pretty good.

I also use 2D to get the grand idea of things but go to 3D to play it out. General Barlow, what mods do you have? I have been thinking of adding a few but am not sure as to what would look best and work best.

I play exclusively almost in 2D. I just don't think I'd have
a good enough feel of what's going on in 3D.Sometimes I'll switch to
3D for artistic effect but I never use it for moving.

I use Rolf Hall's 3d unit icons, from here: http://www.brettschulte.net/ACWCGDC/rol ... aphics.htm . The available packs more or less cover all the HPS games. Just compare the modded file to the original one you are replacing to be sure they match.

For terrain I use a cocktail of mods from various people to suit my tastes. Much of it has been derived from the old Talonsoft WWII campaign series games. If you look here you'll find lots of excellent graphics: http://www.gamesquad.com/forums/downloa ... o=cat&id=4 . You'll have to register to be able to download. Note that the graphics files are often interchangeable between the ACW, Napoleonic and EAW series games (maybe one or two need renaming)so it's worth looking at mods for all these games.

Gentlemen,

I use the 3D Zoom out view mostly. I use 2D to follow road paths where I want to go and to check river crossings and breastworks. I also open my jump map (HPS Gettysburg), during the Reb replay to keep track of where the action is taking place; in the usual 3D zoom out mode you can not always tell your overall location. The jump map puts a red box where the action is relative to every thingelse.

I use 2D...

Old board wargamer... I can't get the big picture with the 3D... and have trouble moving... but I guess it's what you're used to...

Rebel High Command at the bivouac employs both 2-D screens as needed for routine check of the 'big' picture, but my preference remains with the 3-D zoom-out mode.

Which reminds me,

Creek hexsides can prove impossible to spot on the 3-D view screen - whenever blocked by higher elevation changes. They also become nearly invisible to the naked eye whenever a creek hexside enters a WOODS hex. Is their a mod that improves creek-hexside visibility?

I use the 2D mode as I can see more of the battlefield and can get a better feel for what's going on around me. Occasionally I switch to 3D for the artistic value, but only rarely. I too am an old board gamer so enjoy and am used to the 2D mode.

I used 3D almost exclusively in the Battleground series of ACW, but don't care for the 3D mode in the HPS games - I use 2D almost exclusively. Only exception is the reason mentioned several times previously - to see where the creeks and streams are in woods.
