There are not many, if any, 'cheats' to be found in the game engine but I have found one I think, although it doesn't promise to be much more than a novelty in practice.
Move your mounted leader to the limit of his allowance, 24 movement points, and you often find that he has 1 point left over? not much use if you're not on a road? But, if you dis-mount him then re-mount him, you will find that in the process of climbing back on his horse he has gained an extra point and the 1 becomes 2!!! I guess this simulates giving the exhausted animal a good hard smack on the backside?

I hope this proves to be of great usefulness to you all, Union and Rebel Officers alike...[:p] You never know, it might just one day allow you to get an important commander to safety or the critical point on the field...[;)]

Oh, that's just great, Jim! You've let the cat out of the bag and now HPS will have to go and fix it. Didn't you see the UA Special General Order forbidding Union officers from openly discussing this?!! For crying out loud!

Pfft. We Rebs found out that if you move your leader using half of his movement points or less, then keep spinning him in place til you have only one movement point left, then dismount- guess what? You and the horse are so dizzy you can't remount.

If you *really* want to get dizzy, try mounting or dismouting cavalry that has already expended a part of its MP, and make sense of how the penalty is calculcated. Try to guess what will be left if you dismount them, then mount them again. Or vice versa. There's a logic to it ... but it's not really instantly obvious. Mind you, I've forgotten it myself, but I seem to remember there OUGHT to be a logic to it. [:D]

Gents,
Its gets even better!! I tried this maneuver and you can continue to exchange 1 for 2 as often as you like. Hell, its possible to move across the entire board on a road.

Bad news for the Anonymous family as I start scouting all roadways in my battles using this technique. Lots of their boys are liable to go missing as a result...[:p]

Bill, of all the comments on this post, yours is by far the absolutely most humorous! Just the image of it is right out of some Western comedy film like Cat Ballou or Blazing Saddles. Frankly I hope they can fix it as now that the glitch is out of wraps, it may inevitably end up causing some brew-ha-ha when someone snatches a "last turn" objective hex that the opponent had counted out ahead feeling secure that it couldn't be reached...be a helluva way to lose a battle on the last turn. Enough to make one dizzy [:D]
