In a campaign game, especially Gettysburg with all the various similar scenarios, is there a way to tell exactly which scenario the game has you playing?

You have to OPEN the CPF file in Notepad or other text editor. About 10 lines down you will see the scenario name and below that you will see the OOB and PDT used for that scenario.

Most of them are that easy, but not always so. For some of the scenarios, after you play a few turns, you can usually combine the information obtained from the CPF file with how many turns are in the scenario plus what you see occurring on the battlefield to pinpoint exactly which scenario that you are playing.

I used to think that it shouldn't be this difficult, but then I realized that if it was easy to tell which scenario that you were playing, then it would also tell you what your opponent is probably doing and thus eliminate some of the surprises of the campaign. This whole gaming business is like a marriage - compromise here and compromise there with a bunch of in-laws criticizing your every move.

But Bill, I think that you nailed the problem right on the toe, no hand, I've got it ... head. Some of us are trying to do your #2 and some of us aren't. If we did #2 reliably, then we could use won/loss records for the scenario to tell if it might be balanced (like in the old days with the BG games). If we're not going to do #2, then why give us the option to accurately register a campaign scenario but just offer a generic in the Game Registration Form (this reads like someone is going to ask for toilet paper any second now).

This subject has come up a number of times. Isn't this a Cabinet function to decide what the right path is, so that we all get on the same sheet of music.

I've been identifying my scenarios from the cpf file so I can enter it in my new game reports for some time now.

Col Peters,
As far as opening the scenario to look at my opponents arrival times and locations I can do better than that if I want to, I can open up the file and see where he is now. But where's the fun in that, if all I wanted to do was win I'd play the AI, or get you to play me.[;)]

It is ALWAYS best to include the specific scenario name in the game registration. It saves time later when attempting to identify certain awards, etc.
