I cannot seem to get HPS Getty to run on my computer, the brand new one with Vista. But now that computer isn't even running. I have sent it back to HP to get fixed and hope to be back in action and all sorted out in a week or so. Sorry about the delays. I am accessing a frieds computer just to write this. On the bright side, without a computer I just noticed I have a wife and kids. Go figure?
At any rate, sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your kind post. All is well,
EXCEPT FOR MY DARN COMPUTER!!!

Believe it or not HP has still not straightened it out. It seems (and this is what my last phone call got me for info) that they are having parts problems becsuse of the recent hurricane's impact on their facility in Houston. Meanwhile, I've owned the computer more time broken then fixed with no end in sight. Sorry, i'm venting but I also want my fellow officers to know that I'm really not trying to avoid them. My computer has honestly been down and out this long. Though my next phone call is gonna be "give me my damn money back!' and then i will start over again. Once again, I'm sorry guys.[:(]

As General Laub mentioned, about seeing an HomerS posting. Should of gotten a Dell Dude [:D]. You still can get one of their computers with Windows XP for a little while longer from what they got posted at their site. Good luck in getting the HP fixed. Oh also good to see some postings from the AoPee[:p]

As the guote I picked up somewhere around here goes:

"Windows is a set of 32 bit extensions on a 16 bit shell for an 8 bit OS using a 4 bit kernel made by a 2 bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition."

Unfortunately we are stuck with it. You might post what the problem is with the computer. If it isn't an outright hardware failure maybe someone has seen it before. I recently helped a friend get his new HP back working after it decided his CD-ROM didn't exist any more. Sometimes there is an easy fix and sometimes you wonder if you shouldn't take it out in the backyard and shoot it to put it out of its misery. [:D]

Hey Kennon,

Can you advise on getting your computer to recognize a cd? My Franklin seemingly doesn't exist to my computer. I'm running a Mac Book Pro with bootcamped Windows XP. Its not a windows simulator, its the real windows .. works fine for almost all my other software .. just that one cd .. never shows up.

I haven't seen the problem with Windows XP but understand it does occur. Vista is extremely sensitive to older video editor programs like Penacle and programs that try to load their own drivers for CD burning corrupting the CD-ROM/DVD driver. I don't know if this applies to simulator type windows though. If you Google "Corrupt driver CD-ROM Code 39" you will find the Microsoft fix posts for it that gives more information. The fix usually is:

Method One
1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
NOTE: If you are getting a code 39 message, it may be that additional third-party filter drivers were added to UpperFilters and LowerFilters values in addition to Adaptec filter drivers. In that case, you may try to remove the non-Adaptec filter drivers first, leaving the Easy Creator filters in place to see if the Code 39 goes away. If you still receive an error code 39, 32, or 31 message, remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely in the preceding key.

2. Restart your computer.

Be aware that with Vista in particular if you haven't uninstalled the offending software it will probably recorrupt it. It seems a number of software packages, even some you wouldn't think need burn access to your CD-ROM, include driver modifications to the CD-ROM/DVD and can mess it up.

Hey Kennon. Given time I'm sure I would have gotten Vista and Gettysburg to cooperate with each other. Unfortunately, my harddrive completely melted down. YIKES! This is not only confirmed by my own diagnostics, but also was confirmed 3 times over the phone with different HP reps (grrrr). Called today and once again I"m getting delays. Gonna sick the credit card company on em now. Sorry again.[V]

Update:

Believe it or not, still no computer or hardrive from HP. [:I] Got a call from them, they will ship harddrive on Nov. 13th!!! Credit card company tells me that they are gonna refund my money to account and pursue them on thier own. Meanwhile I have ordered a XP driven computer from Dell, who's build date is in two days. I should be back in the saddle by next week. Frankly, I"m completely astounded at how bad the customer service has been at HP. If I wasn't living without a personal computer for over a month now I wouldn't believe it was possible. Sorry to all. I'm relating this story also as a warning to any of you considering buying from HP online.[:(]
