Post subject:  Most Popular HPS ACW Campaign

Gentlemen,

Having just come back to the raks of active in the ACWGC, I was curious as to which of the HPS ACW Campaigns were the most popular and used the most often here in the club? Right now, I've got HPS-Gettysburg and when my supply lines catch up with me (get to my storage unit), can add both HPS-Ozark & Corinth (along with the BG series). I see several Campaigns have been added since I was absent, so the input is much appreciated.

I like Chickamauga and Atlanta, they would be my choice to add next to your collection.

An unofficial survey I took as part of a thread this past summer showed that Gettysburg was the most popular campaign-style disk, with second place shared by Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Corinth.

Corinth offers all of the mods created from it.

Gettysburg is popular just because of the name, but I actually am not too fond of it beyond that.

Chickamauga offers the best play IMHO from the standpoint of even numbers of troops and more equal quality, with a lot of big and small battles. Shiloh is similar in that regard. Vicksburg has some nice scenarios that are not overly big but the campaign is not as great because there is almost zero chance for the Rebs in the early battles. I love Peninsula though it has mostly huge battles - armies are roughly equal in size and quality.

Haven't had enough time to explore the new Antietam disk too much, but it should be great (on paper).

I really like the Atlanta Campaign though I've yet to find a Rebel to go the distance.

Mark, I am playing Roy Purcell, and I can tell you he is one reb that will go the distance, giving me quite a fight.

Interesting post - I am also currently looking into buying another couple of HPS games as a pre Xmas treat.

I've shortlisted between Shiloh, Antietam, Penninsular and Chickamauga. Given those four I am interested to read others' opinions on these.

Hi, Paul,

I don't think you can go wrong on any of them. All except Peninsula were designed by Rich Walker, and either presently have or soon will have all the latest options. The Rich Walker titles also cover large segments of the war. Shiloh has all the battles in the Western Theater in the first year of the war. Then Chickamauga follows the Army of Tennessee from post Shiloh all the way to Missionary Ridge. Antietam covers all the major eastern battles from the beginning of the war through Antietam, except those during the Peninsula Campaign, which are covered on that disk. Rich also throws in a lot of hypothetical scenarios, which is nice. But Peninsula, which was designed by Drew Wagonhoffer, is also a good game, if more limited in scope. The armies (except Jackson's Valley army) have a lot of low morale units and the Rebs also have an edge in numbers, although a lot of militia units are fixed. I have enjoyed them all.

Funny, I've yet to find a Yank to go the distance. Three Reb major victories in the opening scenario and nothing after... if only Johnston had been so lucky! [:D]

I've had alot of fun with both Atlanta and Chickamauga. Not really disappointed with any of the other titles, more of a preference!

Still getting through Antietam...
