American Civil War Game Club (ACWGC)

Standing on the small knoll near the site of the the Landrum Farmhouse at Spotsylvania Battlefield Ntl. Park, I watched today's sunset over the brown fields just north of the tip of the Mule Shoe salient. The air was crisp and still. There were wisps of clouds reflecting the oranges and purples of the setting sun. There was no sound other than the chirping of a few squirels that were irritated at my dog's presence. It was quite a peaceful time on a field that saw so much tragedy and death back in 1864. Spotsylvania is really a beautiful park. If you ever have the chance to visit, don't pass by.

The 145th anniversary of the Spotsylvania reenactment was one of the best I've participated in. Our unit, the 42nd Virginia, accompanied by the 48th Virginia, were on picket duty the morning of the Federal assault and lost heavily in killed, wounded and captured. Much effort went into this reenactment, including constructing trenchline across the front.

If you're interested in ACW reenacting, send me a line. Most units are always looking for new recruits. The 150th anniversary is fast approaching for the war's battles. I've enjoyed and learned alot from the experience.

I had the privilege of being at the Park in March of 2007 with some Club members. It was beautifully preserved as the trenches were still visible. One wonders if the artillery hadn't been moved what the outcome might have been.

That whole area where Ken is from is a Civil War buff's dream. You can see so much in just an hours drive from there. At times I felt like I was in a different time zone.

I reread William D. Matter's book this past summer - If it Takes All Summer - The Battle of Spotsylvania. A really good read.

Probably the best Civil War talk I attended was a tour of the salient. My wife and I were just out taking a drive (we lived in Middleburg, Virginia at the time) and just stopped in. Not preplanned or anything. A guy was there, said he was a volunteer and would be starting a 30 minute tour in the next few minutes. We had a group of 10 or so.

Great talk. Accurate and very well presented. Turned out he was a marine stationed at Quantico and he volunteered at the park on weekends.

Other hobby: Running 30-40 miles per week. Several races a year from 5K to marathon. Boston marathon 2007.
