I am currently involved as the Union commander in HPS Chickamauga #043, The Battle of Chickamauga, Sept. 19th, 1863, 35 turns. The contest is the third battle of a campaign. There appear to be some missing units, but I am not certain as the previous battle of the campaign, Murfreesboro, incurred many casualties. The impact of these I expected and see within the strengths of my present units; and, in fact, I do! But there are still some anomalies.

Johnson's Division lacks a commander! I did lose Johnson as wounded in the Murfreesboro contest, but I would have expected that the senior, surviving brigade commander would have assumed the divisional command as a result. But such is not the case, and the present force, Johnson's Division, goes into action without a commander! This has got to be incorrect.

Also, the Release Schedule indicates that Wood's Division will be released around 1:00 p.m., but Wood's Division is non-existent! While Wood's Division was roughly handled in the preceding battle of the campaign, only one or two units were completely destroyed. So I would have expected, at the very least, to see something of the three brigades on the field! Does anyone know if this is just a misnomer, or is Wood's Division supposed to be part of the scenario? I note that the historical 2-day scenario has the same issue. Historically Wood's Division was very much a part of the battle on both days!

Any information on this?

I've also noticed strange things like this in the HPS games: I played a full campaign of Gettysburg against the AI when I first bought the game, and at Brandy Station thoroughly destroyed the Rebel cavalry, then the next 3 battles (apart from Winchester) were cavalry skirmishes with Stuarts troopers fully intact and their leaders either resurrected from the grave or sprung from Union POW camps.
One of the reasons I got these games was that I had thought the OOB's were persistant and followed the losses incurred in previous battles (both to troops and leaders) I mean, who wants "Grimes" Davis leading a cavalry brigade at Gettysburg when we all know it should be Will Gamble?? [:D]

Hi Joe,

You might want to send your findings to <support@hpssims.com> If there was an omission, they may correct it with the next patch.

I am totally embarrassed at discovering Wood's Division on the field! A classic brain freeze (something I seem to be getting more frequently as I grow older)!

But, Johnson's Division very certainly entered this contest without a leader. Once again, as Johnson was wounded in the previous battle of the campaign, Murfreesboro, I would have expected him to reappear some eight months later. And if not, then I would have expected that the senior brigade commander would have superceded Johnson as divisional commander. The point here is that the entire division loses an important element in command control!

Joe,
If you see any unit or leader, or supply wagons missing in any scenario do let HPS know at the email address Kevin mentioned below. The occasional error is inevitable in games as big as these. I spotted one or two things in a recent Atlanta campaign scenario and Rich Walker / Rich Hamilton quickly got an updated scenario file out to me and said it would also appear in the next patch. These guys are really helpful and responsive if you let them konw through the correct channels.
