Post subject:  Melee overruns

Gentlemen,

I have a question.

In one of my battles (Assault on Sherman from Shiloh), I was playing as the Yanks against one of my new Bgd commanders and two of my routed regiments were simply overrun by enemy melees, even though they had plenty of space to flee into, since they had only two adjacent hexes occupied by enemy troops.

At first, we contributed it to the Yanks simply being yellowbellies and surrendering at first sight, but after further consideration we thought there must have been another reason.

Now, my very able new subordinate had manoeuvered one unit into my rear, but it was still four or five hexes away from the routed units. Is it possible that when the routed units were meleed, they could not move closer to that unit in my rear and were therefore overrun? Or is there a situation where routed units can be overrun (apart from being surrounded or pushed against the edge of the board)?

Where they isolated? Units that are both routed AND isolated can be overrun.

General,

in the 9th turn (of 10), the two routed units indeed show up as isolated, although only one of the 8 hexes surrounding the two units is occupied by the enemy.

If they're routed and isolated, any single good-order combat unit can overrun them freely. You no longer have to keep them surrounded.

There are two cases that cause automatic ellimination by overrun:

First is if the unit is isolated and routed. Any unit that can melee with it will automatically overrun it.

The second case occurs when the unit is surrounded by ZOC's and units occupy, not just ZOC, all the rear hexes. Then if meleed they are considered to have no retreat route and are elliminated if they lose the melee. I am not certain that the surround is required though.
