Well I've only been to Antietam & Gettysburg...but will soon go to Fredricksburg, Chancellorsville et al.....

I'd say it is more peaceful at Antietam...but Gettysburg has great scenery....

Gettysburg...

Went to some others in Virgina 20+ years ago, but don't remember.

I plan on going to Chickamauga and maybe Chattanouga in Sept...
Who knows about those?

1 - Gettysburg (the history is just too prevalent to ignore)
2 - Antietam (prettiest battlefield)
3 - Shiloh (well organized and well kept)
4 - Vicksburg (its been a long time so memory is rusty)
5 - Stones River (like New Market, small enough that I get the feel for it but its obviously hurting for money)

Pat, there isn't much to the Chattanooga park(s). Chickamauga (like Antietam) has an excellent field house and it is well kept but you had better be very familiar with the battle before you tour it or you'll be as confused as a Roger Hulinsky in an Oscar Mayer Weiner vehicle on the D.C Beltway. Another field house worth visiting is the Franklin battlefield (the Carter House Museum). There really isn't a battlefield there but it is worth the stop if you're driving thru Nashville.

Gettysburg. It continues to get better with the landscape restoration efforts. I go there often, and know the most about that battle. Naturally, it's my #1.

Liked Antietam, and always mean to get back there, but never manage. Maybe get there with the confused, weiner driving, General Hulinsky in a few weeks...we'll see what my commanding officer says.

Saw a bit of Fredricksburg, not too much. I was young, and parents were in a hurry, and bored. Only stopped because they have a son that is a history freak.

"General Sickles, this is in some respects higher ground than that to the rear, but there is still higher in front of you, and if you keep on advancing you will find constantly higher ground all the way to the mountains."

I'll agree with mose others:

Sharpsburg
Gettysburg
Petersburg
Wilderness/Spotsylvania/Chancellorsville Park
Chickamauga

As mentioned, for smaller parks these are great:
Perryville
New Market
Stones River (is the new visitors center finished yet? Was still under construction when I visited a few years ago. Not a lot left of the battlefield these days, but what there is is nice.)

Do want to get to Shiloh one of these days...

Harpers Ferry, though not exactly a major battlefield, is so well preserved as to be well worth the trip in and of itself, especially if coming or going to/from Sharpsburg (I'd recommend driving instead of marching the 17 miles, though...) [:D]

Some Smaller Western and Trans Mississippi that are nice:
Port Hudson (Nice walking trails)
Ft Donelson (Beautiful)
Pea Ridge (Good Park)
Sabine Crossroads (Decent-Good Park Rangers)
Prarie Grove (Decent Park but you are on your own)
Wilson's Creek (Very Good Park)
Corinth (Not much there but worth it if you are going to Shiloh)
Baton Rougue (Not nuch there but the Cemetary and the barracks-armory)
Ft Jackson (Excellent...I had always wanted to see it)
Ft. St. Phillip (Only by boat or helicopter and watch out for snakes)
Ft DeRussy ( Also Undeveloped and full of Moccasins-son stepped on one)
Brice's Crossroads (Decent, nice Confederate Cemetary)
Poison Springs (Small but decent)
Jenkins Ferry (worst I saw....all the plaques were taken away during Clintons time- had not been replaced)
Camden (Had a nice cemetary)
Galveston (Has 2 plaques and a museum...)
Sabine Pass (Tiny Confderate battery-I'm still happy I went)

Some other smaller ones I liked:
Balls Bluff (Really cool-I actually got lost in the wilderness there)
Perryville (excellent Park for being private)
Chattanooga (not much there, but Missionary Ridge is worth seeing)
Chantilly (almost gone)
Harpers Ferry (definatly worth the visit)
Ft Gaines (Very good before the hurricane)
Monacacy (Nice field-got a good feel for what happened there)
Ft Moultrie (Ho hum)

Bigger ones I liked:

Shiloh (I love that Park-3 trips to it)
Sharpsburg (Excellent)
Gettysburg (Wrong side won but still a good Park)
Chickamaugua (Very good park)
Vicksburg (Big and confusing but good)
Mannassas (Decent Park)
Petersburg (Impressive hole in the ground)

I've been to about 40 of em but these are the ones I remember off the top of my head......I still want to get to Virginia and see the fields there in earnest plus Ft Fisher....Hopefully I'll make that trip yet.....

My Top 5 would have to be

1.) Gettysburg; it's the one that started my interest in the ACW, been there more times than I can remember.

2.) Shiloh; one word, pristine, not a lot of visitors when I was there, you could almost hear the guns.

3.) Antietam; been there almost as many times as Gettysburg, not a lot of monuments, it's fairly easy to get a feel for the battle as most of it is open fields.

4.) New Market; well preserved field and one of the best small scale battle reenactments, where else can you watch the VMI cadets capture a battery!

5.) Fredericksburg to Petersburg; well it's not one battle or field but what has been preserved is well worth seeing.

For Myself,

1) Chickamauga- (Big and beautiful-Has one of the best Visitor Centers)
2) Shiloh- Nice park, hard to beat

3) Fort Donelson- Very cool

4&5) Gettyburg and Antietam- Most likely I would rate these # 1 and 2, but I only visited them once many years ago.

BTW, if you visit Chattanooga, don't miss Lookout Mountain. Much nicer then Missionary ridge.
