A big nope to this one and other social networking type sites. So far the providers of these service are taking little responsibility for securing them. Because they are networking sites it is easy for anyone in your network to compromise the security of it by not using strong passwords. I can' find it but I remember a CNN article quoting Facebook as admitting to a 1% hack rate. Since I can't find the article again I can't determine how it was measured but this is still awful high by any measure. Some other places quote numbers as high as 3%.

They give you a lot of features for social networking but treat anything you post there like you just broadcasted it to the entire world because you probably have. Always assume any contact made to you through it is probably not the person it says it is. And, treat any request for money just like it came from Nigeria which it probably did.

He is talking about the dangers of having a FACEBOOK or other social network account. For people that are reasonably skeptical of scams, there might be little chance of problems.

I would stay away from they like the plague!

I used to have an account, but due to the nightmare it caused me, I never will again. In my opinion, as someone else said, avoid those places like the plague.

I joined a social networking site at CSW; my first real experience with one. I've known a lot of guys on My Space or Facebook, but even considering the experience at CSW (overall), it wasn't something that seemed to be that useful to me, personally.

It seems like one of those things where mileage varies for people. As for the links, BP is talking about, that is all about the geek-term 'monetizing', and I don't know about it, I 'get' the concept, but in considering my own use of the internets over the years, I doubt I have ever clicked through on a link to buy something, so as a business model, I am not sure it actually works as well as some people say. But then again, maybe it is just me. :)

I did have a Myspace account (well I had signed up for one probably to read someone else's or something -some years ago). I logged back into it recently (for the purpose of deletion - it never occurred to me that I could drop it). And I had something like 10-14 messages sent to me by "women that wanted to meet me" or whatever. Which is sort of along the lines of what I find in my Gmail Spam folder... the usual, ED problems solved and all that. Gosh, I could have been saved.

Ah well, I find enough to do in the net without it.

For those that are opposed to facebook, my guess is you don't have older grandchildren (teenagers and up). Any teenager I know who has access to a computer and the internet is on it. I have 4 grandchildren who are on facebook, including one at college. They communicate all the time via it. And unlike myspace, in order to communicate with someone, you have to be either invited or accepted. It is a good way to see what they are up to, what they are doing and easily stay in touch with them. As far as any ads, as with anything on the internet that is free, all you have to do is ignore them.

Those Nigerian letters show up from time to time to just about everyone on the net. Ignore it, certainly do not answer them.

With all due respect Mr Burdulis, it is stories like this one http://www.theage.com.au/travel/travel- ... -gm1x.html

that make people wonder about that. That from today's news cycle in Australia.

I grant that mileage varies for people, though.

Just being on the internet in any manner leaves one open to possible attack, having information picked off, etc. Driving a car leaves you vulnerable to being in an accident, going swimming opens the possibility of drowning. If anyone wants to find a negative about any activity it's out there to be found. Being 100% absolutely safe and actually living your life are mutually exclusive. Doing any activity brings risks. Everyone accepts and takes different risks. This board here is highly unlikely to be the safest place on the internet, I doubt it is hacker proof. Those worried about facebook probably shouldn't be here either.
