I have "The Atlas of the Civil War" edited by James McPherson which I think is pretty good. Covers all the main battles on all theaters including Cheat Mountain. I believe there is a "Military Atlas of the Civil War" or something similar that is put out by West Point? That might be the best one yet.

Hey Bill,

I have that same book, "The Official Military Atlas of the Civil War" it's 13"X 16", got it on sale a couple of years back for $19.98...still has the price tag on the dust cover. The best collection of acw contemporary maps out there and you can't beat the price.

I believe the Official Military Atlas Bill and Robert are talking about is a reprint of the original companion atlas to the Official Records. I believe it is one of the best bargains ever. I originally bought a reprint back in the 70's that cost me $65, and I thought it was a bargain at that price. But I am always on the lookout for more maps. If I can find this one, I will look it over. It might have maps not in the Official Records atlas that would make it worth buying.

I just found the "Official Military Atlas of the Civil War" by the War Dept on Amazon. It is in good condition for $15 +.

On the official atlas ("atlas accompanying the O.R.")--Freeman in "Lee's Lieutenants" repeatedly points out how inaccurate these maps are. Also, I have always wondered why there is not a single good map on the Seven Days in there, when there are detailed maps with troop placements down below the regimental level for some of the most insignificant actions. Seems a bit arbitrary to say the least. Still, overall impressive and indispensable as a contemporary map source.

I just purchased this one and "The Atlas of the Civil War" other day. Price wasn't too bad on amazon books. I am just getting into both of them now and they seem to each have their own style of maps drawn from the era. Can say that I enjoy each one of them equally as I am a cartographer and like this stuff anyway.
