Perhaps the Reb cavalry is the horse in the lower left corner. [:D]

The composition of this charge is similar to that famous British painting of the Charge of the Light Brigade where the effect of the grouping is very dramatic but in reality, the riders weren't that close together. I wonder if the cavalry manual says what spacing to use in the charge.

It is sad to see a young fellow miss-interpret a picture so badly, if you look in the top right corner you will see a group of cav carrying the battle flag of the Confederacy - these Union troopers are actually in full rout - sad but true[:)]

General,

The above link takes you to Cooke's Cavalry Tactics 1862. It has your answer.

Al:thanks for the link. I saved it as a favorite. From the best I could figure, distance between files would be 4 paces or 12 ft on a charge although Cook does not come right out and say it.

Sorry, but the charge is to the REAR of the REBELS. First, the drawn sabers and the cohesive formation give it away. AND, then your Western Theater counterpart needs his monocle renewed, as the troops behind this CHARGE are the second wave of attackers, as can be seen by the sergeant waving has hat to cheer the charge on.

I think the ability of the Calvary to capture arty and then stay mounted so that you can not melee with them should be changed. They should have the right to refuse to melee, however, if they chose that, they vacate the square giving up the captured artillery.

Oh no Captain, General Whitehead is very serious. It's just all the good artists had pro-Northern sympathies. [:o)]

I still maintain that spelling cavalry "calvary" is sort of humoristic in itself. [;)]

Soem of the board games had this but not the computer ones. It was easier to implement when the two players were standing next to each other.
