Col. Elkin
Chief Engineer AoT

Galvanized Yankees were Confederate soldiers imprisoned during the Civil War, who won their freedom by swearing their allegiance to the Union and enlisting in the Union Army. I just wanted to add a personal story of mine to Col. Elkin's post and article. My great-great-grandfather William A. Davis was a 'galvanized' Yankee. He initially joined a Confederate cavalry unit, 5th (McClellan's) Tennessee Cavalry Bn., B Company, in Chattanooga in August 1861. The unit participated in many actions throughout Tennessee and Kentucky, and William Davis was eventually captured by the Federals in December 1863, and reported as a Prisoner of War in Nashville. In September 1864, he was back in Chattanooga, now in Union hands, and joined the Union 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment, E company. He must not have been completely won over, as he was reported AWOL from his post at Buzzard Roost near Dalton in April 1865. I guess he figured the war was done and so was he!
