I just wanted to add a personal story of mine to Col. Elkin's post and article. My great-great-grandfather William A. Davis was a 'galvanized' Yankee. He initially joined a Confederate cavalry unit, 5th (McClellan's) Tennessee Cavalry Bn., B Company, in Chattanooga in August 1861. The unit participated in many actions throughout Tennessee and Kentucky, and William Davis was eventually captured by the Federals in December 1863, and reported as a Prisoner of War in Nashville. In September 1864, he was back in Chattanooga, now in Union hands, and joined the Union 6th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment, E company. He must not have been completely won over, as he was reported AWOL from his post at Buzzard Roost near Dalton in April 1865. I guess he figured the war was done and so was he!
