Fellow officers,

It has been a great pleasure serving this organization as President for nearly four years now.

In most instances, I have continued to follow the precedent set by General Pierre Desruisseaux, the first president of the ACWGC – that of staying in the background and allowing the Chiefs of the Armies to run things. My style has been primarily one of laissez faire – “the less government the better”.

I’ve also held firm to a strict interpretation of the club rules. There have been times some have encouraged me to assume more power than I believe the club rules have allowed for this position. And I’m sure there have been times when I should have taken a firmer stand. But, fortunately, the club is still here in spite of me and any actions – or inactions – I have taken.

As I mentioned in my inaugural address, I’m sure there are plenty of you fellows who could do a better job. Now is your opportunity.

In a few short months, I will begin packing my belongings and moving out of the Executive Mansion, turning over the keys to the gentleman who will replace me. I’ve already placed an order with my tailor to refit my uniform. (It is amazing to me how ill-fitting my uniform has become while spending so much time behind a desk.)

The question to come before the club very shortly is … who will be that gentleman?

According to club rules, any officer holding the rank of Colonel or above is eligible to serve as Club President. The term is for two years, and the Club President can succeed himself once (for a total of four years in office).

To run for office, you would only need to find two fellow officers to nominate you.

The election committee will be announced in the very near future. Shortly afterward, I expect a timetable will be set and announced for nominations, campaigns, and voting (as proscribed in the club rules).

If you are interested in the position yourself, start considering who you could get to nominate you. If you know someone else you believe would be a fine Club President, contact him and encourage him to run – and offer to be one of his nominators.

Again, it has been a wonderful opportunity to serve the club in this capacity. Although I look forward to getting back into the saddle, I must admit I will miss this place.

Maybe I should not have etched my initials into the desk with my pen knife, though …

Not likely.

Respects all-around D.W. Belly up and after some good times, take Carole on a 'around-the-south' tour. A personal thanks for your efforts for the club and friendship.

DW,

My congrats and thanks to you for many years of fine service - you should hold your head high and be proud of your service as Club President. I'll echo General Walters in saying I doubt anyone could have served so well. You helped usher in a new era in this Club with elected officers on the Cabinet and kept a steady hand at the helm all throughout.

Huzzah!

Congratulations on a job well done - but we've still got enough time to start the biggest barn yard brawl yet. If we do, I'm taking a poke at them Theater Commanders that you Rebs have got - you know, the McAmish guy and that Weir fellow. If there ain't no brawl then you deserve a couple of drinks, and if there is a brawl then you'll need a couple of drinks. Set him up bartender and put 'em on Jeff Laub's tab.
