Home page "Virtual Civil War.com"

This site with ACW photos from the Library of Congress has many quite interesting pictures I have never seen before. It does include some of the most common photos.
I read somewhere that news photographers were not allowed to publish pictures of Union dead because of effects on civilian morale. We usually see photos of confederate dead.
These include Union dead.
Some are landscape shots, very well done, considering the camera technology of the time using glass plates for the negatives.
There are many shots of buildings of the time.
Labeled, because some are painful/distressing to look at:

The portrait photos of commanders at the end are worth a look.

Confederate dead in the ditch at Bloody Lane, Antietam -It reminds me that these men were probably neighbors back home and died side by side.

Federal soldier disemboweled by a shell in Gettysburg -gross, because probably a direct hit.
This one brings home the reality of battle in a way seldom experienced.
