I had a question from one of my opponents today about the effect that having an officer mounted versus dismounted has on their probability to be wounded or killed. I remember reading something at the War College about this but could not find it again. Does anyone know if it increases the chances if your leader is mounted? Or, is this just an urban legend?

It's not documented, but everyone believes it. See it this way--if there were no downside to having a leader mounted, why should he ever dismount?

You'll have to do a search, I think, to find it Blake- but this topic came up within (iirc) the last 12 -18 months -and I remember the answer from the HPS guys (I think it was Rich Hamilton -but I could be wrong because I don't have time to look for it) surprised me as I know that in the Talonsoft Battleground series leaders being mounted vs dismounted did have an impact on leader loss rolls.

However, in HPS ones being mounted does not result in any increased chance to be a casualty (it can have an impact on movement over bridges however - as a mounted leader cannot cross a bridge that has had damage enough to prevent cavalry movement across (mtd being the only way that can happen since dismounted cav is treated the same way as inf in line). So in those rare cases you'd have to dismount to get the leader across.

If I have time later on (not guaranteed) I will see if I can find the prior thread for you.

I remembered the old Battleground games had an increased probability of officers being wounded or killed if mounted but wasnt sure if that held over into the HPS games. Thanks for the input!

That's my understanding also, Battleground games mounted/dismounted had different odds, with HPS it doesn't, since learning this I never dismount leaders unless I do it unintentionally.

Here's the thread in question that I referred to above. Man, it was over 2 years ago -- time flies.
