I am playing game in HPS Atlanta and just discovered only "full hex bridges" can be destroyed. The “hex side bridges “ on creeks cannot be destroyed. Does anyone know the thinking why any bridge could not be damaged or destroyed?

Good question, Al! I'd like to know that, too.

Maybe its a masonry bridge. Masonry is difficult to dismantle unlike a timber bridge. Just guessing.

Don't try to make any sense of it. I have spent years trying to talk sense to the people who have influence over such things, with limited success. But feel free to send an email to Rich Hamilton at HPS detailing the problem. He can probably let you know one way or the other if anything will ever be done to correct the discrepancy.

Full hex bridges were major construction projects that required a lot of engineering to build. The hexside bridges across creeks were often burned but you'll find plenty of examples of where the troops could easily rebuild/build a bridge to replace the destroyed one. Often nearby houses were stripped of all their lumber to build them.

You are right, Mark, but it would take time to build a bridge over a water barrier impassable by infantry, which creeks are in this game. How much time is open to question, but I would think more than a game turn certainly.

Mike,

In the game I have the whole Union army right on the heels of a whipped and retreating corps. Delalying the Union persuit even a one turn would be a major relief.

I'm sure others could give you quick examples but I'm pretty sure a regiment of 250 men could whip up a bridge to cross a creek pretty quick, especially if there was lumber nearby in the form of a house or barns.

In Malaya, the Japanese used mats on the backs of their men to cross creeks but they didn't have horses and that was another war.

Al,

Unfortunately, it takes time to destroy a bridge as well as rebuild it. There are a number of documented instances where bridges were set on fire but saved by pursuing forces before they became unusable. I suppose that is the rationale for taking several turns to destroy the hex bridges. But I think in the case of the hex bridges, it takes too long to destroy a bridge.

It would appear to me that "if" a bridge was able to be destroyed across a stream a moving unit should at least take the movement penalty that would apply to an unbridged stream. But to not allow the bridge to be destroyed at all makes no sense!

Yep, I remember when we were in hot pursuit Of Grant and his Yankees during the Appomattix Campaign....The Yanks tried to burn that bridge, but we put it out and trpped em, forcing Grant to surrender unconditionally.....Hence his nickname "Unconditional Surrender Grant"......Yep I remember it clear as day! Those were some good times....
