 Post subject: Replay Error Question
PostPosted: Sun Mar 20, 2011 2:48 am
I got this from a friend of mine the other day. I can't answer the question but hopefully one of yall can.

My opponent started a game HPS "Gettysburg Historical 1.1" & when I received it (for the second move) I downloaded and extracted it to what I believe is the right file. I click on "Old" then "PBEM" then selected the file and clicked on "See Union replay, but when I click on that I get "error reading from replay file". If I don't click on replay I get an "unable to open scenario file" message. The screen is black except for the "hot button" octagon.
Any Suggestions?

Are you both using the same patch?

As Gen Nelms mentions make sure you are both patched to same version, if the patch included an update to the map or oob files this can cause problems with existing games. The fact that you are getting a black screen leads me to believe this is a map file problem. Normally if it's an oob problem the map will show up but not the units when you skip the replay.

For informational purposes the bte file is a text file with the current information of the location and condition of all units. It also includes a pointer to the oob and map files that are used. If they don't match on the two machines it will cause problems.

Another possibility is the bte file is corrupted, this is becoming more common as members quit using zip utilities, zipped files seldom get corrupted in transmission while standard text files which is basically what the bte file is often do. If part of the file gets corrupted it can cause the game engine to try and load a non existing file. If you are both using the same version than try backing up and redoing the last turn that worked. This is a good reason to keep at least the last couple of game turns saved in your email.
