Well after general firing had erupted, and one side was advancing on the other with the intent of driving those opponents from their position . . . A regularly scheduled train emerged on tracks that ran across the path of the advancing troops. This happened during an actual 1862 Civil War battle. Which one?

2nd Battle of Bull Run. Manassas Junction was a railroad crossroads. :?:

I thought 2nd Manassas as well. I remember a story where the Rebs captured a bunch of supply trains during the campaign as Jackson's men got behind Pope and his line of supplies.

Stones River occurred on a rail line but I dont recall any such story there. Shiloh is definately not the answer.

Maybe around Corinth?

You're right as far as you go; there were trains at Manassas which were captured by enemy troops marauding behind lines. My question, however, deals with a train which entered an active field of battle, between the forces, while one side was advancing on another.

This reminds me of a trick question Professor Jackson asked his class. Something like "why can't you send a telegraph from Strasburg to Lynchburg?" After all the students guessed incorrectly Jackson revealed it was because there was no telegraph wire between the two places. Thats what passed for a joke in Jackson's mind. Clever though.

Talk about pointless trivia... how do I know that!!!??? I must have read it in Robertson's Stonewall Bio.

If this is one of those trick questions though....

I do not know the answer, off hand, about the train. So, I tried to find a reference to an action that involved a train during the actual battle. I could not find anything.

So, my guess would be Franklin or Corinth.

An interesting result of my searches: http://www.gatewaynmra.org/articles/civil-war1.htm
