Good Lord, Mike! Do you actually remember The Rough Riders?!!! I thought I was one of the oldest guys around here!

Let's see if we can settle this! How about telling me, if you can, who was the Saturday morning sponsor for Twenty-six Men? 8)

Hi, General,

I never heard of that show until you mentioned it.

I remember 1959 (I graduated that year). I do not remember much of that show, but:

GUNSMOKE, BONANZA, American Bandstand, Rawhide, Cheyenne, Perry Mason, The Untouchables, Leave it to Beaver, Howdy Doody (My brothers and sisters were younger), Milton Berle, I Love Lucy, Mickey Mouse Club (well worth watching for Annette Funicello)

I remember Tales of the Texas Rangers and also Death Valley Days sponsored by 20 mule team borax.

I also seem to remember Tales of the Bengal Lancers, but I guess that would be an Eastern rather than a Western.

Don't forget the TV series on Mosby. I am not even sure of the name now but think it was the "Gray Ghost". Going back further there was "Swamp Fox" but these weren't really westerns. The alternating series of Maverick, Cheyenne, Sugarfoot, and Bronco were very good. Especially Maverick. There is a web site that will allow you to watch a number of these old series like "Have Gun Will Travel" but I have lost the link.

In case your feeling nostalgic they still sell Borax 20 Mule Team. I can verify that Borax weighs enough to justify a 20 Mule Team! (in actuality they also had two horses in the lead)

The 26 Men series was sponsored by Tootsie Roll! Here's a link with the theme song towards the bottom: http://www.fiftiesweb.com/tv/26-men.htm.

What a wonderful website! Brought back many memories. Thanks!

Still don't remember 26 men though.

I never saw" 26 men" or "Rough Riders" and I thought I saw them all. They must not have lasted long. did anyone mention "Wanted, Dead or Alive" with Steve McQueen?

Good western that lasted for a few seasons.

I am far too young to remember any of these except from reruns or home video. Sad how the western genre has nearly disappeared from TV. Since I was born (1981) about the only western series on TV I can recall are Dr. Quinn and Deadwood! I am not including Walker, Texas Ranger. That's dangerous considering Chuck Norris was the star. And as we all know - Chuck Norris was never aware of the filming of Walker, a film crew just showed up at his house and started filming him

The last western series I remember was in the mid-nineties on TNT named "A Man named Lazarus". It was about a Lincoln bodyguard who had tried to prevent the assassination and was a fugitive from the real conspirators, led by Senator Ben Wade. Starred Robert Urich. Not that good, but it was a western, and it had a lot of Civil War references, including a whole episode about Custer.

I was checking out the new shows for Fall and found "Hell on Wheels", about a former Confederate looking for the Yankees who killed his wife. Don't know if it is a series or a movie, but it will be on AMC on Nov 6 (Sunday) for anyone interested. (Yanks may not be; I'm sure the Reb will find and execute the malefactors without much trouble, a la Josey Wales.) :P

AMC has the TOP 10 Greatest Westers listed:

Oops: forgot to mention that AMC is having a vote on "who is the greatest movie cowboy of all time" too.

"Hell on Wheels" is pretty well done for TV but I am not sure it got renewed after it's first season. They have been rerunning it pretty consistently but the last show left the main character an outlaw.
