Post subject:  Retirement of General Dierk Walter

(This is a copy of the posting made this date within the Parade Ground & Mess Tent of the Union Army HQ Forum.)

OFFICERS OF THE ACWGC UNION ARMY,
ATTENTION TO PARADE!

I have received this date the official retirement request of long-time club member and decorated, senior officer, General Dierk Walter, present commander of 3rd Brigade, Second Division, VIII Corps, Army of the Shenandoah. The 2/VIII was Dierk's orginal club assignment.

In accepting General Walter's request, one which he was very insistent upon as it would guarantee his unrestricted return to the club at some future point, I am cognizant of the loss that his leaving creates. In terms of his statistical record the Union Army is being deprived of a very capable and experienced combatant! General Walter's personal DoR game record stands at 61-16-30-12-26, a remarkable attainment of and by itself. It was acquired over a period of more than 10 years, and included the reception of the Union Army's two highest awards, the MOH and OSM, each awarded for a total of three times! General Walter also holds a three-time award of the Sheridan Combat Medal and is a recipient of the Distinguished Sevice Order. His campaign and battle ribbons are too numerous to itemize! He was the 146th member to join the club and is presently the 6th ranking Union officer with the highest OBD Point total, 3038!

In personal contribution and voluntary service to the club General Walter has few peers, having created the original Union Army War College (now known as the Union Army Library) and having served as its Commandant for a considerable period of time, bringing to bear his considerable skills as a webmaster. One has only to search his name within the Mason Dixon Tavern to get a true sense of his involvement and commitment to the club. He also very capably and adroitly served as the Union Army GinC for the year 2010, during which time he undertook to establish the foundations for a more accountable command structure.

I have personally known him as an intelligent, focused and highly energetic individual, one who is now applying the full measure those skills and his time unreservedly to his young and growing family and his professional life. And I invite all of you that have known him to join me here in saluting him and wishing him well in his future, perhaps leaving a memory of two of your time with him or of him.

Gentlemen of the ACWGC Union Army, we have a former General-in-Chief of the ACWGC Union Army, retiring.

OFFICERS OF THE ACWGC UNION ARMY,
Present, ARMS!...Order, ARMS!
Parade, DISMISSED!

Gentlemen of the Union.

Words fail, when a Southerner attempts to comprehend an event of this . . . . . words fail . . .

General Dierk Walter could be compared to a favourite chair, a fond memory from one's youth, a summers's evening with the scent of magnolia and black powder . . . . ah . . . the superlatives could fill the page.

Y'all no doubt will place more fitting tributes and thoughts here than any old Rebel Reprobate could ever muster . . . .

So I'll just wish Dierk, a happy sojourn where ever He is going, health and happiness as long as he wants 'em and a fond hope and desire that he comes back to the ACWGC soon . . . . permanently or a least to visit a spell.

Dierk, Thank You for all your time, effort and energy, your courtesy and level head and especially Sir - your Passion.

May Your God keep You well and content Dierk.

Patrick G. M. Carroll.

I am sorry to see this, even though General Walter has apparently caused consternation in our ranks on many occasions. Never crossed swords with him personally, but I know that many officers have benefited from his contributions here at the tavern. Good luck, General, and here's to a speedy return!

Respectfully,

There was a time when Dierk was efficient, knowledgable, and tireless. Now I guess that he is efficient, knowledgable, and tired. Thank you for your many contributions to and for the club, and we expect to see you and your children in the future. They grow up fast.

Dierk,

In the ten years we've known each other I've had both the honor to be your commander and the pleasure to serve under your command. Your tireless devotion to the club and your work for the good of the Union Army and the ACWGC leaves a legacy that you have every right to be proud of and your combat abilities will be sorely missed by the Union Army.

Best wishes for you and your family and I look forward to your return at some future time.
