I ran across this today. Just when you think you have heard all the Civil War stories someone tells another. The number of Asian Americans who fought was very small but its still an interesting untold chapter of US History.

A number of years ago I came across a reference to a man of Asian descent from New Orleans on the Confederate roster. It's been a while, but I'll see if I can find it. New Orleans is/was a real melting pot and every race imaginable was represented.

Wasnt it true Grant and/or Sherman either barred Jews from their Armies or didnt want them? I'd have to look it up.

An application of a Jewish soldier for permission to attend certain ceremonies of his synagogue in Richmond was endorsed by his captain: "Disapproved. If such applications were granted, the whole army would turn Jews or shaking Quakers." When the paper came to General Lee he endorsed it: "Approved, and respectfully returned to Captain _____ with the advice that he should always respect the religious views and feelings of others."
