I am giving a presentation next week to the local chapter of the Daughters of Union Veterans. I've chosen as my topic "Music in the Civil War", and I plan to serenade the ladies! :D

In addition to berating ... er, I mean, SERENADING them, I will share background information on some of the songs.

I would like to open with a particular quote. Unfortunately, I can't locate the particular quote I'm thinking of. (I hope I am not dreaming it! lol) I am sure I read somewhere that Robert E. Lee forbade the playing of "Lorena" because it made the troops homesick and (he thought) encouraged desertion.

Does this sound familiar to any of you? If so, can you help me locate it?

Thanks, Gents!

Ernie, I had found the first wiki article but not the second one. That has provided some great material!
