New Western Theater of the Confederacy HQ & Flag

Atlanta, Georgia

The day was bright as the train pulled into the station in the city center. Out stepped a Confederate Colonel to read a proclamation:

Hereby on this day, the Headquarters of the Commanding Officer of the Western Theater of the Confederate States of America, Lieutenant General Scott Ludwig shall be established for the leadership & governance of the two field armies in the Theater, the Army of the Mississippi and the Army of Alabama.

All officers will be directed to note the new location of the Headquarters:

After the proclamation was read, Lieutenant General Scott Ludwig stepped down from inside the train. A color bearer came with him. The new flag that the General was to use was unfurled:

The color bearer read from a piece of paper:

The Western Theater HQ flag under the second command of Lieutenant General Scott Ludwig.
The flag's background is the "stainless" white flag used previous. The flag has components from the
two armies in the Western Theater. The Army of Alabama and the Army of the Mississippi.
This is shown in the upper left corner that has the red crimson cross of St. Andrew from the State of
Alabama's flag representing that army. Placed over it is the Great Seal of the State of Mississippi,
to represent that army. The blue cross and the stars represent the cross of St. George from the
Sovereignty or Secession Flag. Finally in the upper right is the Battle Flag turned upwards to represent
the Confederacy as a whole and the mixture of various flags used during the War.

Flag designed by Lieutenant General Scott Ludwig and dedicated on 25 November 2011

Indeed a beautiful flag Gentlemen!

Hey Gen Blake - are you related to the Colonel Blake who commanded the Irish Brigade fighting for the Boers against the Brits in the Boer War in South Africa?

The Irish Brigade was originally the idea of John MacBride, born in Westport County Mayo Ireland, towards the end of the 19th century. With a colleague Arthur Griffin and the Irish Society of Johannesburg, he decided this was his opportunity for Irishmen to strike a blow against an old enemy, Great Britain. The Brigade was a unit of 500 men, mostly Irish but also included Americans and French and, once accepted by the Boer Army, they were called the Irish Transvaal Brigade. All members were volunteers and lived in the same manner as their Boer compatriots, off the land. A graduate of West Point, John Fillmore Blake, was chosen as their commander.

The Transvaal Irish Brigade joined the war in October 1899 and over the next year fought in many major battles such as Colenso, Spionkop, Dundee, Tugela Heights, and the siege of Ladysmith. When Blake was injured in the battle of Bergendal, MacBride took over command. Sadly, the Brigade found they were fighting against their fellow countrymen in the British Irish regiments such as Inniskilling Fusiliers, Connaught Rangers and others, some even recognized neighbour’s from Dublin in the British ranks. During the Siege they were situated to the right of Pepworth hill
