Posted with the permission of Gen. Scott "The Mad Prussian" Ludwig.

Hi y'all.

I am in training right now as a cadet.

Recently I recieved a 30$ gift card to Amazon. com for Christmas and was planning on getting either the HPS game Chickmaugra or Atlanta. I can only afford one and I was hoping to get some input into which of the two games is stronger.

Thank you Kindly,

Not sure what you mean by stronger but my recommendation is to always go with the one that interests you the most as both are outstanding products.

This is difficult to answer fairly, one players opinion might be the total opposite of anothers with neither being right or wrong.

But, if I were forced to choose between the two...

Chickamauga offers three very well known historical battles (Perryville, Mufreesboro and Chickamauga in Oct & Dec '62 and Sept '63) plus their variants. On the other hand the individual battles on the Atlanta disk are taken from the campaign of 1864. Maybe sensible chronology says get the earlier battles first?

There is a fair amount of scenario's to be had from either title and I believe that the Atlanta campaign is one of the best and you also get a couple of scenario's on the HUGE map. Saying that, Atlanta does feature a large number of entrenchment hexsides which can make play for certain gamers ...problematic?

I luckily own both titles but I think I would suggest getting Chickamauga first. I cannot now imagine owning only one and not the other though.

See the HPS site for a closer breakdown of what you get with each game, but buy one and plan to get the other eventually.

Cadet Chambers, as you might undoubtedly be primarily playing either game package as the Confederate commander, perhaps you ought to think about the differences between Bragg, upon whose campaigns the Chickamauga game is based, and Johnston/Hood, upon whom the Atlanta campaigns are based. Not that that would have any noticeable overall effect in the actual game play (except where those commanders are individually involved), but it might pique your interest to see how you might have done better than they actually did historically!

(Nice to see you posting again, Brig. Gen. Wilkes!)

I prefer the Chickamauga disk because I am more interested in the earlier battles. In addition to the three mentioned by General Wilkes, there is also Missionary Ridge, making four battles. Also, I think the forces are better balanced in Chickamauga for the most part, although there are some gems on the Atlanta disk as well. It should boil down to the the disk containing the battles you are most interested in.
