Post subject:  Change in Morale Rules ?

I was looking over the User's Manual for Chancellorsville tonite and when I read the section on Morale it states

When a unit suffers casualties due to combat, it will take a Morale Check to see if it Routs or becomes Disrupted at the end of the Phase. In addition, units with Fatigue level 900 that take a Fatigue loss also are required to take a Morale Check.

I thought the HPS games required a precheck prior to Morale Checks except for a unit that lost a melee. As I recall there was a formula of losses/losses+25 and some percentage had to result in order for a Morale Check to take place. This sounds more like the BG system where all units that took casualties had to make a Morale Check.

I think they just vaguely worded their manual and left out the 25 man test. I haven't verified it but I have never observed any deviation from the existing HPS engine in Chancellorsville.

When HPS went to losses in men rather than BG's step losses they had to put a correction in so one man losses would not cause morale checks just like 25 man losses. Their solution was to average it out with the pre-morale check of random test against Losses/(Losses + 25).

In the other statement the check really isn't a single roll that can cause Route "or" Disrupt. The game still has these two results separated by what phase they occur in. Offensive fire can cause Routes only. Defensive fire can cause Disrupts only. Although I really wish they would change to the other system of pass/disrupt/route check on all morale checks.

Hi, Ken,

If you look under the "Combat Results" section in the users manual, it confirms what General Whitehead said. I guess they didn't think to clarify in the "Morale" section.
