I am sure this has been asked before but maybe some answers have changed since it was last discussed years ago.

Imagine you could view any one Civil War battle (Eastern Theater only to narrow it down here) from above the battlefield. Which battle would you select?

My own answer is 2nd Manassas. The Confederate Army was divided and outnumbered with Jackson's men holding on for dear life to their railroad cut position. With enemy waves being thrown at them they were able to somehow holdout throughout the day and allowed time for Longstreet's men to arrive and for Lee to plan the crushing victory of the next day. The battle was full of heroism on both sides, timely arrivals of reinforcements, and dogged determination by the Confederate defenders. It was not the North's finest hour but it was one of the South's brightest moments.

Gettysburg would have been a grand sight - the "fishook" and especially Pickett's charge.

Watching the wildlife running through the Yankee camp at Chancellorsville ahead of Jackson's attack would be a treat.

As for places like Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, etc. there could be no satisfaction in watching from above the hell our ancestors went through. I'd prefer to be witness to the discussions and thoughts of the commanders involved as they planned their operations.

2nd Bull Run for me too. It's always been my favourite wargaming battle since the BG version. It's a definite "might have been" ...but for both sides I suppose.

I feat the mistakes might be a bit hard to watch but a view from above might explain the timing and some of the odd decisions?

I picked Antietam. I think a view of the battle from above would give you an excellent feel for how poorly coordinated the Union attacks were that allowed a smaller army to defeat a much larger one.

My vote is for Bull Run. The opening act of the war. Jackson "standing like a stone wall". The confusion and chaos of the Federal retreat.
