Gentlemen,

The year is 1861 and you are joining the military! Which branch do you join and why?

Just for fun as always!

Personally I chose the infantry. I am naturally short and I figure the closer I am to the ground the better my chances are of surviving.

Gen. Blake sir: {salute}

Infantry for me sir! I'm afraid of sharks, horses and carrying very heavy brass or iron objects.

Minie balls and blisters, not so much. :lol:

Regards sir, {salute}

Lt. "Deano" Martin

I would go with Arty-Making things blow up is a good hobby. Plus you don't have to walk a lot.

Artillery. Besides being big enough to hitch to the gun with the rest of the horses I'd much rather be shooting with a big gun then a little one.

I always wondered why the sergeants always shouted "Shoot low boys, shoot low. :lol:

Respectfully,

One step stool would suffice.

Why Sir, I would join the cavalry.
I have already done my share of marching and foot patrols, and would willingly allow some one else to stand in the line of battle and "seek the bauble reputation in the cannon's mouth".
In answer to the rhetorical question "Who ever saw a dead cavalry man", I would suggest that a dead cavalry man is the result of poor leadership, poor casevac (much easier to support a wounded man on a horse than to stretcher him off), or plumb bad luck (such as being one of Gamble's troopers on 7/1/63).

Respectfully yours

Artillery, always best to have the biggest gun.

"Do not talk to me of Naval Traditions sir, the traditions of the Royal Navy are rum, sodomy, and the lash"
Winston S Churchill, to First Sea Lord Fisher, ca. 1912

Following this remark, Sec Def made the ships of the US Navy "dry" in 1914. Possibly a non sequitur?

Very fine traditions those threee :mrgreen: - spent some time serving on US ships, can never understand why they are dry - Canadan ships are the best - they have beer machines!! - back in my time it was 50c a beer. Being in the RNZN we only had rum at mid day and two beers in the evening - not as good as the cannooks.

Although I have a pretty dismal record for cavalry tactics, it's the mounted service for me. Seems I always want to get to where I"m going in the fastest time possible.......
