I just stumbled upon this:

http://www.towergames.com/tg/line_of_muskets.jsp

Seems interesting. Has anyone here had any experience with it?

I registered and took it for a spin last night. There are a few introductory games you can play for free so I tried those out.

The system is wego which is OK by me, both sides give orders and then resolution is simultaneous. Scale is brigades.

Graphics are very basic but functional. It appears to be using the Java architecture.

There are some nice features like 4 different formations, and casualty reduction is visible (the physical unit gets smaller). All the basics are covered adequately including resupply, which is simple but abstract.

They actually got the terrain on the Cedar Mt. map reasonably correct... :P

It's worth a try for something different; I plan to play around a bit more. The non tutorial battles cost $1.50 each (or 10 for $10 etc.) and some provide an AI opponent. It doesn't look like there were many players in the lounge area (games room) but it could have been the time of day. Joe Bob says check it out.

$1.50 to play a game?

Hmmm.

Heck! I will happily play anyone here for 2/3 of that price! Thats right! You too can play Blake for just $1 American cash! For a limited time two games for a $1.50! Just send all cash, no checks or money orders, directly to my home.

They do give you 3 'tokens' when you sign up so you can play 3 of the bigger historical battles for free. Watching the simultaneous 'we-go' replay is fun at least and the AI games seem to me to offer a fair challenge.

My undying hope is that the sooner HPS realizes that their CW series is not the panacea of operational Civil War gaming the sooner they will upgrade (or scrap and re-design) the series and take advantage of 21st century technology. :(
