The whole Southern economic system was based on slavery. No way the plantation-owners were going to give up their slaves. As someone (?) said: "the plantation owners were willing to sacrifice their sons but not their slaves." Also, Cleburne's assumption that the slaves would willingly fight for the Confederacy was flawed. Who was going to guarantee their freedom? When the Lee's Confederates invaded Pennyslavania in 1963, they kidnapped all free blacks they encountered and sent them back into slavery down south.

Cleburne was Irish - who said the plan had to be feasible?
Were the poor whites of the south as racist before /during the war as some of them were after the war? The Irish laborers of the north were in direct competition with the African americans for the manual jobs, and many were certainly anti-black and few were pro-emancipation, yet by 1863 they welcomed AA soldiers. "Sambo's right to be kilt" Would Southern infantry have welcomed blacks in butternut?

Hi Robert {salute}

I'm in Baton Rouge. If you ever want a battle or two here in LA, let me know. :mrgreen:

I guess you have been to Forts Randolph and Buhlow and Bailey's Dam; but do you ever get up to Mansfield?

Anyway, I saw you live in Pineville so I wanted to say hello.

Deano

Hey Deano,

Yeah I live about a mile from Fts Randolph and Buhlow. I used to go to the reenactment at Pleasant Hill every year, but haven't been able to get away the last few years. I need to get up there sometime to do some research as I recently found a family member in the 28th (Gray's) LA Inf. They were in the battles and he ended up in a hospital somewhere around there.

I'll holler when I have time for another game.

Dude,

You gotta be kidding! My ggggf was in the 28th Louisiana (Gray's) Infantry! He fought at Mansfield! That's unbelievable! We gotta talk.
