Check the thread I started:

http://wargame.ch/board/acwgc/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18143

For that matter join in and add your comments too. The more people looking at the game from different points of view the better. I have been a little busy so haven't gotten back to the thread for some time.

They described the game as "grand tactical" but I wouldn't. It is very much a tactical level game. It is hard to handle above division level but I need to get into it a bit more before I say it can't be done at higher command levels except through multiplayer.

My big concern with the game is lack of PBEM support. Setting up a realtime game involving multiple people is no easy task and I am not sure how cleanly it supports doing it. Without a central server to handle setting up IP hosting and such it can be quite an undertaking to set up your own hosting.

But at the same time it would be fantastic to play out a full battle of Gettysburg using the game system with players for every division and above position.

I purchased the game and have enjoyed playing it, especially multiplayer. Playing real time is obviously much different from the HPS and TS turn-based games, and each system has its advantages and disadvantages. In terms of battlefield strategy, the games are similiar-terrain, elevation morale, troop quality, etc. Although I've never hosted a game, its my understanding that it isn't all that difficult. If you haven't tried it out yet, I encourage you to do so and let us know what you think.

Hosting is a bit difficult the first time you do it. Since the last time I tried to follow the instructions for setting one up failed, I can't say how difficult. The problem is that most people's computers have two software firewalls and one hardware firewall (on router). All these have to be properly configured to both pass the port the game is using and the IP address out to the internet. If there were a standard for handling these functions it would be easier but that isn't. There isn't even a standard way of referring to the different parts that must be set. To make things more complex most computers don't have fixed IP addresses which is also a requirement for hosting. I am not even certain you can created an external fixed IP address on a computer connect to a cable modem. To compound the problem the only feedback you get when you attempt it is that it didn't work.

Since I have never even tried to host, I yield to your observations and conclusions.
