I've encountered a number of naval ranks with which I was not familiar and thus thought that I needed to expand my knowledge in that arena. For those who have the same curiosity, here are some decent websites that explain such (e.g. what exactly was a Master in the U.S. Navy).

Sorry, but for some reason I couldn't find anything on air force ranks.

What about 'The Union Army Balloon Corps'? :) Now we'll have no wisecracks from you southern boys. :wink: It was headed by a "Chief Aeronaut" and served the North from October 1861 until the summer of 1863.

That's nothing special. We have been watching the Yanks fly for years. It's gotten so that when we see a Union General we have to ask him to turn around so we can recognize him. :mrgreen:

Really?! My it's always so wonderful to actually be asked! How fortunate I just happen to have my violin handy - right on the chair beside me actually. Hand me my violin won't you Errol.

Get back here with that! Thank you.

Ah hum... in honor of the Yanks who didn't run fast enough I dedicate this song.

Hark! Was it the night wind that rustled the leaves,
Was it moonlight so wondrously flashing?
It looks like a rifle -- "Ah! Mary, good-bye!"
And the lifeblood is ebbing and splashing.
All quiet along the Potomac tonight,
No sound save the rush of the river;
While soft falls the dew on the face of the dead -
The picket's off duty forever.
"All quiet along the Potomac tonight!"
