I haven't got Campaign Overland yet, but I certainly like the idea of constructing trenches mid-game and wonder how this would work. Ideally, it would make sense if trenches, abattis, embankments, etc should start off with lower defensive benefits and then gradually increase in value depending on how long a unit spent working on it, just as it's possible to damage/repair a bridge. Here is what it says about building trenches in the User's Manual Trench Construction - The scenario must have a non-zero Trench Construction Parameter Data value. To construct Trenches, an infantry unit must be in Column formation, or a cavalry unit must be Mounted. Use the Make Entrenchments option of the Command Menu. The unit will show up described as Entrenching. For each hundred, or fraction of a hundred, men in a given hex Entrenching, 1 is added to the Trench Value in that hex per turn. When the Trench Value in the given hex reaches the Trench Construction value, the hex will become a Trench hex. |

Actually, in looking at a Rapidan scenario, breastworks defend at -50% and so do trenches. But unless I'm misreading it, trenches only protect against fire while breastworks defend against melees as well. Embankments also still fit into the mix somewhere, although I didn't see them in that particular scenario. In that PDT they are -70% In that particular scenario the chances of building breastworks are 33%, about twice the probability of what I remember from previous games. I remember seeing a 50% chance in another PDT. The trench value in this scenario was 45, so a 750 man regiment would build a trench in 7 turns (8x7). The only advantage I see in a trench over a breastwork is that it protects from all directions (or so I assume.) I messed around with in several scenarios moving and firing. Against Reb breastworks in the woods, I was unable to inflict a single casualty by fire, even at range 1 for infantry and range 3 for artillery. Melee did cause casualties though. Lots to ponder in this game. |

33% in a 20 min scenario = 100% in an hour 50% in a 30 min scenario = 100% in an hour Also, it is possible to build and collocate trenches and breastworks in the same hex, not something we asked for. |
